Vipers set final 22-man roster

March 24, 2007 - arenafootball2 (af2) - Alabama Vipers News Release

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Tennessee Valley Vipers have set their final 22-man roster as they continue preparations for Friday night's season-opening 7:30 kickoff against the Alabama Steeldogs at the Von Braun Center.

Reassigned players included Cumberland wide receiver/defensive back Glenn McKnight, Virginia defensive back Shernard Newby, former North Alabama players Damon Frier and Tyus Boyd, ex-Troy defensive back Ron Harper and Kentucky fullback/linebacker Richard Gray.

Western Oregon's Matt Jirges will be joined on injured reserve by fellow offensive/defensive linemen Tony Bonds of Ole Miss and Campbellsville's Braxton Anderson.

Vipers coach Milt Theodosatos made the cuts after analyzing performances from Friday afternoon's scrimmage against South Georgia.

"It was a good scrimmage and I was very satisfied,'' Theodosatos said. "We saw what we needed to see."

Defensive back /wide receiver Henry Freeman will also serve as the backup quarterback while the Vipers search for another quarterback to challenge Tony Colston for the starting spot. That move was made after ex-West Georgia quarterback Jeremy Clements was reassigned last week.

"We are looking for another quarterback now that has past indoor experience and constantly during the course of the season we will be bringing in guys on two-day waiver tryouts in order to upscale our talent pool,'' Theodosatos said.

Standouts during Friday's scrimmage included veterans Freeman and wide receiver/defensive back Travis Blanchard, former Capital record-setting wide receiver Lewis Howes and ex-USC standout John Cousins.

"Freeman and Blanchard are excellent players and they showed that they haven't lost a step - they can play,'' Theodosatos said. "Howes is for real and Cousins has really lived up to his reputation.

"The other players also looked good but there were some mistakes. But that's no problem because it's all about reps and practice. I was pleased to observe the intensity and the potential that's there."
