Vipers Re-Assigned Three From Championship Team

Huntsville, AL- The 2008 af2 ArenaCup Champion Tennessee Valley Vipers have been assigned three key players from last season's championship squad. Defensive lineman Eric Scott, linebacker Rajohn Myles, and defensive back Demetrius Derico, have all been re-assigned to the Vipers for the upcoming 2009 season. "Getting these guys back is great for the city of Huntsville and the Vipers. They vastly strengthen our team in different areas and will provide us with experience and leadership", said Vipers head coach Dean Cokinos. "Along with the guys we already have back from the 2008 team, these additions continue to give us the continuity needed to defend our title."

Scott, who set the Vipers single season record for sacks with 17.5, returns to anchor the Vipers defensive line in 2009. The Southern Mississippi product finished the 2008 season 5th on the team in tackles with 33.5, led the team in tackles for loss with 18.5, and forced four fumbles. He also came up big during the Vipers championship playoff fun, collecting five sacks. "It's exciting to be back in Huntsville. We have a good group of guys coming back, and we're just going to work hard try to bring that title back to Huntsville again," said Scott.

Myles, a product of the University of Alabama-Birmingham, returns to the Vipers for the 2009 season after finishing 2008 with 35.5 tackles, 8.5 sacks, and 9.5 tackles for loss at the mac linebacker position. He saw previous af2 action in two seasons spent with the Birmingham Steeldogs.

Derico spent the majority of the 2008 season in the Vipers secondary and ended the 2008 regular season as the teams leading tackler with 79, and also led the team in interceptions with nine. The Alabama State product also led the Vipers on the post-season with 29 total tackles, including 9.5 in the championship victory over Spokane.

VIPERS ASSIGNED SEVERAL NEW ADDITIONS FOR 2009

The Vipers have also been assigned several new additions for the 2009 season, including former Louisville Fire defensive lineman Keller Speaks and former University of North Alabama wide receiver Jason Messing.

Speaks, who started 11 games last season for the Fire, collected 30.5 tackles, and was second on the team with six sacks. He also added 7.5 tackles for loss, and recovered three fumbles.

Others added are linebacker Harvey Logan (Stillman College), defensive back Nikata Rutland (Tennessee State), and defensive back Eddie Simpson (Northwestern).
