
Vipers Cruise Past Red Claws

HIDALGO, Texas -- The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (20-10) topped the Maine Red Claws (19-14) 139-122 tonight at State Farm Arena. With tonight's win, the Vipers improve to a 10-1 record on their home court and remain second in the NBA Development League standings.
Houston Rockets assignment Greg Smith led the Vipers with 20 points. Glen Rice, Jr. and Vernon Macklin chipped in 18 points each. Rice, Jr. shot 5-6 from three-point range. Kyle Fogg added 17 points, followed by Andrew Goudelock, who was 3-3 from behind the arc and tallied 16 points for the game. Toure Murry added 10 points.
The Red Claws were led by Chris Wright with a double-double 29 points, 10 rebounds. DaJuan Summers followed with 24 points. Shelvin Mack added 15 points. Omar Reed recorded 13 points and James Mays chipped in 12 points.
The Vipers took control of the game in the first quarter with a 15-0 run to set the tempo for the night. A layup from Mays put the Red Claws on the board 15-2. By the end of the first quarter RGV held a 39-17 advantage over Maine. RGV held on to its lead throughout the second quarter and entered the half on top 74-51.
The Red Claws fought back throughout the second half. They outscored the Vipers 43 to 33 points in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to put them on top. RGV claimed the game 139-122.
The Vipers hit the road tomorrow for a 7 p.m. game at the Texas Legends. The Vipers will have a week off for the All-Star Break before hosting the Texas Legends in back-to-back games Feb. 22 and 23 at State Farm Arena.
