Vipers Begin Additions For 2009 Season
Huntsville, AL- The Tennessee Valley Vipers have began making additions to the team and are preparing to begin their run at defending the 2008 ArenaCup Championship. The Vipers have been assigned defensive lineman Robin Gamble and Tyrell Elston, along with wide-receiver Michael Johnson, defensive back Eric Crosby, and wide-receiver/defensive back Jeremy Stevens.
Gamble, 6'5" 263 pounds, played his collegiate football at Miles College, and is a pass rush specialist, and will look to add depth to the Vipers defensive line. Elston, who saw action with the Vipers last season, collecting 4.5 tackles during the regular season, along with two tackles for loss. The University of Sewanee product also carried the ball three times for 13 yards and a touchdown in the post-season.
Michael Johnson, who also saw action for the Vipers last season, will be back in the black and green in 2009. The University of Tennessee-Chattanooga star caught 26 passes during the regular season for 195 yards and three touchdowns. Crosby, who saw limited action in 2008 due to injuries, will look to produce in the Vipers secondary next season. The 6'2" Crosby finished last season with 20.5 tackles in just six games. He also added four pass break-ups and recovered a fumble.
Stephens, who played collegiately at Tennessee State University, also missed most of the 2008 season with injuries, but will return for the 2009 season. He caught one pass for 11 yards last season, and totaled two tackles. "The signing of these players gives us a good initial start to 2009. Four of the five signees played in games for us in 2008, and this will give us some continuity going into the upcoming season", said Vipers Head Coach Dean Cokinos. "They are all young, talented and upcoming players."
