San Jose Giants News Release
STOCKTON, CA - Angel Villalona homered twice and Christian Arroyo also went deep to propel the San Jose Giants to a 7-3 victory over the Stockton Ports on Thursday evening at Banner Island Ballpark. The Giants knocked out 14 hits and never trailed in the contest en route to the win. San Jose (33-44) has now claimed two out of the first three games in the series.
Villalona (2-for-5, 2 HR, 3 RBI) became the first Giants player to hit two home runs in a game this season. Arroyo (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) homered for the second straight night while Daniel Carbonell (3-for-5, 2B, 3B, SB) had three hits and finished a home run shy of the cycle.
San Jose jumped out early scoring one run in the top of the first inning against Stockton starter Kyle Finnegan. A one-out walk to Arroyo started the rally before Jeff Kobernus singled to put runners on first and second. Then with two down, Ryder Jones lined a single into right plating Arroyo with the first run of the game.
The Giants extended their lead to 2-0 when Villalona led off the top of the third with a towering solo home run to left center. The home run was Villalona's first of the season.
Ray Black started on the mound for San Jose and struck out six batters over a career-high 2 2/3 innings. Black, who was making just the second start of his professional career, surrendered one hit and walked two during his 45-pitch performance.
Black struck out two batters in a 1-2-3 bottom of the first and then fanned two more in the second to work around a pair of walks. In the bottom of the third, Black struck out the first two batters of the inning before Brett Vertigan lined a single into right - Stockton's first hit of the game. Tyler Rogers was then summoned from the bullpen and quickly got out of the inning as with Melvin Mercedes at the plate, Vertigan was thrown out at second attempting to steal.
Rogers then used a double play to pitch around a one-out walk in the fourth before setting down the Ports in order in the fifth.
With the score still 2-0, the Giants then extended their lead in the top of the sixth. After the first two batters of the frame were retired, Seth Harrison drew a walk and stole second. Arroyo was up next and he blasted a two-run home run to deep left center. The homer, Arroyo's fourth this year, increased the San Jose advantage to 4-0.
The Giants pushed across another run in the top of the seventh as Carbonell tripled into the right field corner with one out and scored two batters later on Ty Ross' sacrifice fly.
Meanwhile, Ian Gardeck fanned two in a scoreless bottom of the sixth inning before running into trouble in the seventh. John Nogowski led off with a single before Matt Chapman stepped to the plate and launched an opposite-field two-run home run to right. The homer, Chapman's team-leading 13th of the season, cut the San Jose lead to 5-2.
Gardeck (2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO) settled down after the long ball to quickly retire the next three hitters before the Giants answered with a home run of their own in the top of the eighth. With one out, Kobernus singled and then Villlalona belted a two-run home run to left - his second round-tripper of the game - to make it 7-2.
Jake Smith entered from the bullpen to begin the bottom of the eighth and pitched around a one-out single and a two-out walk to maintain the five-run cushion. The Ports plated one run in the bottom of the ninth as Chapman drew a leadoff walk and scored when the next batter, Tyler Marincov, doubled to deep left center. Marincov though was thrown out on the play after rounding second base too far before Smith struck out the next hitter, Branden Cogswell, for the second out of the inning. Beau Taylor followed with a single, but Smith (2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO) came back to strikeout Franklin Barreto to end the game.
Rogers (2-1) was credited with the win for San Jose after tossing 2 1/3 hitless innings of relief. The right-hander walked one and struck out none.
Finnegan (5-5) surrendered two runs (both earned) on seven hits over the first three innings for Stockton to take the loss.
Kobernus (2-for-4, SB), Jones (2-for-5, RBI) and John Polonius (2-for-5) also finished with multi-hit games for the Giants.
