Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - Two innings after providing the game-tying hit in the ninth inning, Mott Hyde came up with a walk-off double for an 8-7 JetHawks win over the Inland Empire 66ers on Thursday night at The Hangar.
With the score tied at seven and Michael Smith (6-1) on the mound for the 66ers (37-39), James Ramsay drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the 11th inning. Mott Hyde then hit a double to right-center field, giving the JetHawks a walk-off victory and snapping the club's six-game home losing streak.
Trailing by one run entering the bottom of the ninth, Lancaster had tied the score against Alan Busenitz. Marc Wik hit a leadoff single and advanced on a Ramsay sacrifice bunt. Hyde then singled to center field to score the tying run.
After entering in the eighth with a one-run deficit, Albert Minnis pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief for the JetHawks (41-36), allowing just one hit and striking out five while walking two. Andrew Walter (1-1) received the win after recording the final out of the top of the 11th. With the victory, Lancaster improved to 7-1 in extra-inning games this season.
In the top of the eighth inning, Tyler Palmer hit a one-out single against JetHawks tandem starter Austin Chrismon. After Minnis entered in relief, Palmer moved to second on a groundout to first and then scored the go-ahead run on an Eric Aguilera single.
Lancaster had tied the score in the bottom of the seventh. After a leadoff home run by Wik, Ramsay then doubled and Hyde followed with a walk. With new reliever Alan Busenitz into the game, a J.D. Davis flyout to right field moved Ramsay to third. A.J. Reed followed with a fly ball to shallow center field, and as shortstop Roberto Baldoquin made a diving catch, Ramsay tagged up and scored the tying run.
With a two-run deficit entering the bottom of the fourth, the JetHawks got a triple from Ramsay and a RBI-groundout by Davis. Lancaster then took the lead in the fifth on a suicide squeeze bunt by Jose Fernandez and a Ramsay sacrifice fly.
Inland Empire had opened the scoring on a two-run homer by Michael Strentz off Daniel Mengden in the second inning. Mengden, however, would not allow another run, totaling seven strikeouts and just one walk over five innings.
Four JetHawks players collected two hits each in the contest.
The two teams will wrap up the series on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Evan Grills (3-5, 6.55) will pitch for the JetHawks opposite Inland Empire's Garrett Nuss (0-4, 8.80).
