January 15, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Victoria Seals News Release

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Seals are proud to announce the official schedule for the 2010 Golden Baseball League season. Set to play their second campaign at Royal Athletic Park, the Seals will play 90 games in three different countries over the course of the summer.

Expanding to ten teams for the first time since its inaugural season, the six-year old Golden Baseball League will be one of the largest independent professional baseball leagues in the world and the becomes the only professional baseball league with teams operating in three different countries.

"We are thrilled to open our second season in the GBL at Royal Athletic Park this May," said Seals President Darren Parker. "The addition of two new teams, plus the return of both our Canada Day and Father's Day games means that we are looking towards another fantastic year at the ballpark!"

New to the GBL this season will be Na Ikaika Koa Maui (NAH / EE-kai-kah / COH-ah / mow-EE) playing at Iron Maehara Stadium in Wailuku, Maui. The unique name translates from Hawaiian to 'The Strong Warriors of Maui'. Also playing their inaugural season will be the Cimarrones de Tijuana (SEE-ma-roan-AYS / DAY / TEE-ah-WAN-ah) who will call Calimax Stadium in Tijuana, Mexico home.

In addition, the St. George Roadrunners will be remaining a member of the league for their fourth season, but under new ownership. The only team not returning for the 2010 campaign will be the Long Beach Armada, who were unable to reach a lease agreement to continue to play at Blair Field. Permit complications with the City of Long Beach led to the unfortunate displacement of the Armada.

The Golden Baseball League will play a split-season 90 game schedule, with each team playing 45 home games and 45 away, which is the longest schedule in league history. The GBL will consist of a North Division that includes the Calgary Vipers, Chico Outlaws, Edmonton Capitals, St. George Roadrunners, and the Victoria Seals. The South Division will feature Na Ikaika Koa Maui, Orange County Flyers, Cimarrones de Tijuana, Tucson Toros, and the Yuma Scorpions.

The regular season opens on May 19, 2010 and will conclude on September 6, 2010. The playoff format will feature a five-game division playoff, where the first and second half champions of each division will face off with the winners advancing to a five-game Golden Baseball League Championship Series. The league's Annual All-Star Game will be played July 14, 2010 in Tucson, Arizona, where the best of the GBL will square off against the Northern League All-Stars.

Rule changes for 2010 include a switch to National League (MLB) rules, eliminating the Designated Hitter, an increase in player salary levels, implementation of a Waiver Wire for the first time in league history, and speed of play rules to shorten time between innings and during pitcher changes.
