Victoria Seals News Release

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Seals are proud to announce that Jason Kershner (LHP) and Brandon Villafuerte (RHP) have signed with the team for the 2010 Golden Baseball League season. The pair are the first non-returning players to be inked by the team with spring training just two and a half weeks away.

"These are two big league guys who will bring a lot of talent to our organization," said Seals pitching coach Kip Gross. "Both Jason and Brandon have years of experience at a very high level of baseball, which will serve as a benefit to our younger pitchers as well."

Kershner, who made his MLB debut with the San Diego Padres in 2002, joins the Seals after appearing in 55 games for the Atlantic League's York Revolution last season. In 89 big league appearances with the Padres and Toronto Blue Jays, the Scottsdale, Arizona product posted a 3-5 record and a 4.22 earned runs average. Through 15 combined seasons in minor league baseball, the 12th round draft pick of the Philadelphia Phillies has compiled nearly 940 strikeouts while maintaining a 4.16 career earned runs average in 517 games played.

Villafuerte comes to Victoria after completing the 2008 season at the AAA level in the Florida Marlins system. The native of Hawaii has played 91 games at the major league level, earning a 4.12 earned runs average over the course of five seasons in Detroit, Texas, Arizona, and alongside Kershner in San Diego. This will be the 1994 New York Mets draft pick's second stint in Independent baseball, following 39 games in the Northern League in 2007. In 14 minor league seasons, Villafuerte has allowed a mere 57 home runs in 540 games played.

The 2010 Victoria Seals season kicks off May 21 when the brand new Na Ikaika Koa Maui arrive at Royal Athletic Park. Both single game and season tickets for the 2010 campaign are now on sale, available online at www.victoriaseals.ca or through the Select Your Tickets box office.
