CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa â When the new Veterans Memorial Stadium was in its planning stages several years ago, a commitment was made by the Cedar Rapids Ball Club to use the facility for more than just Kernels baseball games. Family Day at the Ballpark, which takes place Saturday, pushes the total of non-Kernels events and meetings held at the ballpark this year to more than 130. Family Day at the Ballpark is Saturday, September 25, from 8:30 a.m. to noon.
Approximately 215,000 people attended events at the stadium in 2004 and more than 30,000 were there for reasons other than Kernels games.
The Kernels, members of the Midwest League and an affiliate of the Anaheim Angels Major League baseball team, exceeded their attendance expectations this year. Kernels attendance, counting 69 regular season home dates, the Midwest League All-Star Game and a home playoff game, topped 185,000. The 177,929 drawn during the regular season was the third highest total in club history.
Non-baseball related events, including the homecoming for the 234th Signal Battalion National Guard unit, corporate meetings, concerts, school, civic and social events attracted more than 17,000 people to the stadium.
Baseball events not related to the Kernels brought an additional 13,000 to the facility. The biggest draws were the Iowa Conference baseball tournament and the Iowa vs. UNI baseball game.
