INDIANAPOLIS, IN- The Indiana Ice concluded their 2008 USHL Draft this afternoon with 17 selections that included 11 forwards, five defensemen and one goaltender.
The Ice used their first round pick on goaltender Brett Bennett, who played in 31 games last season for Boston University (Hockey East) compiling a record of 16-10-3 to go along with a 2.63 GAA.
"He is a proven goaltender with major collegiate experience," said Ice V.P. of Player Personnel Jim Paliafito.
Other early round picks went to defensemen Joe Hartman and Zachary Fulton. Hartman was the top-scoring defenseman for the Alexandria Blizzard (NAHL) and Fulton was one of the top blueliners for Northwood Prep in Lake Placid, NY.
"Those two players along with a guy we took later in Zach Josepher are three tough and talented defensemen who can both run a power play, but still be responsible defensively," added Paliafito.
Up front, early round forwards included a pair of big-time scorers in Chris Stafne and Jason Bourgea. Stafne scored 47 goals for Duluth Denfield High School in Minnesota, while Bourgea was the top-scoring player in the New England Prep League.
"We were able to select a gifted crowd of quality forwards beginning with scoring stars Stafne and Bourgea," noted Paliafito. "Overall, we picked a nice blend of forwards from all across the United States including both coasts and the midwest."
Indiana also secured some local flavor in the draft using a selection on Fishers, IN native Brad Denney who played defense for the Indiana Junior Ice last season and is currently a senior at Hamilton Southeastern High School.
