Princeton WhistlePigs News Release
A well-respected veteran radio broadcaster with almost 27 years experience behind the microphone, Garry Griffith, has been named as the play-by-play broadcaster for the 2013 Princeton Rays professional baseball team.
A resident of Myrtle Beach, SC and a member of the faculty in the Mass Communications Department at Francis Marion University since 2006, Griffith has 15 years of prior experience calling games in professional baseball for affiliated teams. This includes 1989-1992 for the single-A Fayetteville Generals (Detroit Tigers affiliate) in the South Atlantic League, 1993-1994 for the double-A Knoxville Smokies (Toronto Blue Jays affiliate) of the Southern League, 1999-2006 for the single-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Atlanta Braves affiliate) of the Carolina League, and 2008 for the advanced rookie level Great Falls Voyagers (Chicago White Sox affiliate) of the Pioneer League.
He also handled the radio duties for one season (2010) with the Normal (IL) Cornbelters of the independent Frontier League. Since then, he has been broadcasting three sports (men's and women's basketball along with men's baseball) for Newberry (SC) College. Other collegiate sports broadcasting credits in his broadcasting career that launched in 1986 includes various sports at Coastal Carolina University, Winthrop University, and Presbyterian College.
"I am honored, humbled, and truly look forward to broadcasting the Princeton Rays' 2013 Appalachian League season. I am appreciative for the opportunity to work with the Rays and doing the games over the family of stations that make up the Princeton Rays Radio Network. I am also looking forward to working with the Rays' field manager Danny Sheaffer and his coaching staff. I will thank everyone in advance for listening and will look forward to seeing everyone at the ballpark," said Griffith about his upcoming summer with the Princeton Rays.
Griffith has also put many of his experiences about people he has encountered as a baseball broadcaster on paper via a 176-page book "Meandering Through the Minor Leagues: One announcer's thoughts from Myrtle Beach to Montana," which was published last August and has received many favorable reviews nationwide.
"We are very happy to have Garry with us for the 2013 season to bring the radio action to our fans and followers. His experience and heavy familiarity with the inner workings of minor league baseball will be a huge plus for us," said veteran Princeton Rays General Manager Jim Holland in making the announcement.
Princeton's games since the beginning of the 2008 Appalachian League season have been broadcast on the "Princeton Rays Radio Network," which consists of all 68 games being broadcast on ESPN Radio 102.3FM "The Ticket" with the 34 away games additionally being carried on WAEY-AM1490 and WAEY-FM103.3 as well as games being available via internet broadcasts also. The combined network signals enable P-Rays' games to be picked up live throughout both southern West Virginia and many areas of southwestern Virginia.
The debut of Griffith behind the microphone for the P-Rays will be with the team's 2013 opener in Danville, VA versus the Danville Braves on June 20 with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Being an away contest, the game broadcast will be available throughout the region on radio stations 102.3FM, 103.3FM, and WAEY-AM1490 as well as the internet at www.princetonrays.net.
Griffith will be taking over the P-Rays play-by-play duties from Kyle Cooper, who was the voice of the P-Rays for the past five seasons from 2008-2012. Cooper has moved to eastern Tennessee to pursue other professional opportunities.
