Vermont downs Royal for opening-night victory

Montreal, Quebec, Canada-The Vermont Frost Heaves took an early 11-2 lead and never looked back, defeating the Montreal Royal 98-82 in both teams' season opener here tonight.

Forward Issa Konare scored 16 points and collected 8 boards in the win, while former UVM star Erik Nelson and Dokun Akingbade each scored 15 for Vermont. Guard Terrance Green contributed three buzzer beaters, including one from half court to end the first quarter.

Leading the way for Montreal were forwards Cordell Jeanty, who scored 20 points, and Quilinious (Q) Randall, who added 13. The Frost Heaves outrebounded the Royal 46-38.

The Frost Heaves (1-0) return to the Green Mountain State for a rematch with Montreal on Thursday, Nov. 15, in their home opener at the Barre Municipal Auditorium on Times-Argus Night. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m., with festivities featuring Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas and Northfield Savings Bank Community All-Star and founding Frost Heave Dana Martin beginning at 6:15 p.m. The Frost Heaves' Burlington opener is set for Memorial Auditorium on Sunday, Nov. 18, Fletcher Allen Health Care Day, vs. Halifax at 2:05 p.m.

Tickets for any Frost Heaves home game may be purchased by going to flynntix.org; by calling 802-86-FLYNN; or by stopping by the Flynn's main box office at 153 Main Street in Burlington. Tickets for games in Barre are also available at all First in Fitness and Allen Lumber locations. Groups of 20 or more may call the Frost Heaves' office at 802-860-0082 for discounted rates.
