(Wilkes-Barre) The Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Pioneers have taken their biggest step to getting back to the Arenacup with the addition of 2007 Schutt Offensive Player of the Year Ryan Vena.
"Our boy is coming home," said a smiling Head Coach Rich Ingold,"Ryan gives us the boost we need. The way our defense is playing Ryan won't have to carry us every week."
With the assignment of Ryan Vena it gives the Pioneers an upgrade at the quarterback position and raises their offense to the elite level in the league, complementing a defense that currently is ranked second in the league in fewest points allowed per game, second in sacks and second in interceptions.
"Ryan adds explosiveness to an offense ready to ignite. He's clearly the general when he's on the field" states owner Cosmo DeNicola.
In 2007 the 6'0 220 pound Vena rewrote the Pioneers record books with a gaudy 92 TD passes and 16 rushing touchdowns, a league leading 124.2 passer rating, while finishing third in the league in total offense accumulating 4397 yards and only throwing nine interceptions.
After receiving the Schutt Offensive Player of the Year award at the league banquet the night before Vena went out and set the ArenaCup record for most touchdown passes in a game with seven and was named Schutt Offensive Player of the Game even in defeat.
Vena returns to the Pioneers after spending the beginning of the year with the AFL's New York Dragons. An ankle injury towards the end of camp landed Ryan on the injured reserve of the Dragons for the first six weeks of the season.
The Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Pioneers next home game is 7:30 Saturday night April 26th at the Wachovia Arena. Come out for Pete's Birthday, all of Pete's mascot friends will be there with a Pete poster for all the kids through the door and the first 2,500 fans 16 and over will receive paintball tickets from Pocono Whitewater and Skirmish USA.
