Valkyries Fall Short Against Supernovas

The Orlando Valkyries fell short in a 1-3 (23-25, 25-22, 22-25, 20-25) loss Saturday night to the Omaha Supernovas at CHI Health Center.

Opposite hitter Shainah Joseph led the Valkyries with 16 total points (15 kills and one block) in the contest. Full statistics for the match can be found here.

Set 1

The Supernovas took the first set 25-23. The Valkyries started the set with an early 7-4 lead. Omaha tied the set at 8-8 and eventually took the lead at 9-8. The Supernovas never trailed again and led by as much as four. Orlando would come to within one at 22-23 to make it interesting at the end. However, the set ended on a service error by the Valkyries. Outside hitter Adora Anae and Shainah Joseph both had four kills in the set for Orlando.

Set 2

The Valkyries would take the second set 25-22. The Supernovas jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. With the score at 4-1, the Valkyries scored five straight points to lead 6-4. Orlando would lead by three at 9-6 and then Omaha went on a 4-1 run to tie the set at 10-10. The supernovas took the lead at 15-14 and the Valkyries regained the lead at 18-17. The two teams would trade points and then the Valkyries pulled away to close out the set. Orlando middle blocker Kaz Brown led both teams with six kills in the set.

Set 3

Omaha came from behind and took the third set 25-22. The Supernovas jumped out to an 8-3 lead. With the scored at 10-6, the Valkyries scored six straight points to lead 12-10. Orlando would lead by as much as three. With the Valkyries leading 20-17, Omaha scored three consecutive points to tie the set at 20-20. A kill by Joseph and an ace by Anae gave the Valkyries a 22-20 lead. However, it was all Supernovas from there, with them ending the set on a 5-0 run. Omaha's Bethania De La Cruz and Joseph both had five kills in the set.

Set 4

The Supernovas pulled away to take the fourth set 25-20. The Valkyries had an early 8-4 lead. Omaha scored four straight points to tie the set at 8-8 and eventually take the lead at 12-11. Orlando regained the lead at 13-12 and the Supernovas took the lead at 15-14. With the score tied at 18-18, Omaha scored three consecutive points to lead 21-18. That run was vital in the Supernovas winning the set. De La Cruz led both teams with six kills in the set.

The Valkyries (5-7) are back in action on Thursday, March 21, against the Atlanta Vibe at 7 p.m. at Atlanta's Gas South Arena. The next Valkyries home match on Thursday, April 11, against the Grand Rapids Rise gametime has changed from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Addition Financial Arena.
