KATS END BLAZE WIN STREAK IN MUSIC CITY, 69-55
Utah Lose Early Lead; Nashville Earns First Win of 2007
NASHVILLE - The Utah Blaze jumped out to an 20-7 lead in the first quarter, but the defense was unable to hold the Nashville Kats offense in Sunday's 69-55 loss in front of 7,108 fans at the Gaylord Entertainment Center.
"We were out hustled tonight - plain and simple," said Blaze head coach/general manager DANNY WHITE. "The ball wasn't bouncing our way and we have to find a way to stop teams. You can't win in this league if you aren't able to come up with those stops."
Utah QB JOE GERMAINE finished the game 28-of-36 passing for 326 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions. WR ORSHAWANTE BRYANT led Blaze (2-1) receivers with 12 receptions for 127 yards and one touchdown, while WR SIAHA BURLEY added nine receptions for 150 yards and three touchdowns.
The Blaze struck first when Germaine found Burley on a 19-yard scoring strike on the first drive and took a 20-7 lead after Germaine hooked up with WR/LB RYAN DENNARD on an 8-yard pass with 3:50 remaining in the first quarter.
Nashville countered with a pair scoring strikes from Offensive Player of the Game QB JEFF SMOKER to WR KENNY HIGGINS to give the Kats their first lead of the game at 21-20 at the end of the first quarter. A lead they would not relinquish.
Nashville outscored the Blaze 21-14 in the second quarter and 14-7 in the third quarter.
Smoker finished 19-of-30 passing for 273 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. The ADT Defensive Player of the Game, OL/DL JAMES BARON, had two tackles and including a sack and a pass breakup, while WR/DB MAURICE BROWN earned Ironman of the Game honors.
The story of the game was Nashville FB DAN ALEXANDER, who tied an AFL record with five rushing touchdowns.

*Give Utah a 2-0 record at home in 2007.
THE COACHES:
Utah - Danny White, 15th season
130-65 (.670) reg. season; 150-76 (.670) overall
During his 15th season as an AFL head coach and second with the Blaze, White has compiled a record of 150-75 and advanced to the AFL Playoffs in 12 of the previous 13 years (hasn't missed the postseason since 1992). Prior to joining the Blaze, White was the head coach of the Arizona Rattlers for 13 seasons (1992-2004). The AFL Hall of Fame coach has two titles (1994 and 1997) to his credit and has made five ArenaBowl appearances (1994, 97, 2002-04). During his last season in Arizona in 2004, White compiled a 13-6 record and made his third straight ArenaBowl appearance. White won AFL "Coach of the Year" award in 1993 and officially became the head coach of the Blaze on April 21, 2005. White guided the Blaze to a 7-9 regular season record during the Blaze's inaugural season. The Blaze also made the postseason before falling to the rival Arizona Rattlers in 2006.
Grand Rapids - Sparky McEwen, 3rd season
10-25 (.286) reg. season; 10-25 (.286) overall
McEwen is in his third year as head coach and director of football operations for the Grand Rapids Rampage. In two seasons, he has led the team to a 9-23 record, including a 5-11 mark in 2006. By the end of the season, the Rampage were tops in the Arena Football League in passing yards allowed per game (243.1) and ranked fifth in the league in total yards allowed per game (274.9). With McEwen at the helm, the defense set several team records, including least passing yards allowed per game, most takeaways in a season (30), most interceptions in a season (19), and most forced fumbles in a season (13). The 2006 Rampage also controlled the ball on offense, leading the league in average time of possession (31:30). In 2000, McEwen joined the team as a pro-scout and assistant coach. His experienced scouting led to the signing of two future ArenaBowl MVPs, Terrill Shaw and Willis Marshall. A year later, McEwen was promoted to offensive coordinator and helped guide the Rampage to their ArenaBowl XV win. In his three seasons (2001-03) as the Rampage offensive coordinator, Grand Rapids' offense scored more points and gained more yards than any other team in the AFL. In 2004, McEwen served as the assistant head coach/offensive coordinator for the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz of arenafootball2.

Five Interceptions Downfall For Blaze on Road
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Grand Rapids Rampage recorded five interceptions and scored 24 unanswered points in the first half as the Utah Blaze lost, 59-49, in front of 4,848 fans at Van Andel Arena.
"We need to do a better job of protecting the football," said Utah head coach/general manager Danny White. "But, this wasn't just one player for us. This loss goes to the entire team. We need to play better, collectively, if we expect to win."
The Rampage were led by Offensive Player of the Game QB Chad Salisbury, who connected on 19-of-30 passes for 231 yards, six touchdowns and one interception. Two-way standout, WR/DB Josh Bush, earned both Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors by collecting three receptions for 36 yards, three touchdowns, while adding 7.5 total tackles and an interception.
The Blaze (3-5) started off the scoring when OL/DL Bryan Henderson hauled in a 10-yard reception from QB Jason Gesser to take an early 7-0 lead.
The Rampage (3-5) answered with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Chad Salisbury to Josh Bush to knot the score at 7-7. A Marvin Taylor interception was followed by a 24-yard field goal by Peter Martinez to give the Rampage a 10-7 lead to end the first quarter.
After an interception by OL/DL Colin Bryant, OS Anthony Hines scored from a yard out to give Grand Rapids a 17-7 lead to start the second quarter.
Gesser threw his third interception of the half when Bush stepped in front of OS Siaha Burley at the goal line to prevent a sure Blaze touchdown. Salisbury then found WR/LB Jerome Riley on the very next play for a 19-yard touchdown to extend the Rampage lead to 24-7.
Gesser found WR/DB Orshawante Bryant on a 21-yard touchdown to narrow the lead to 24-14 in the second quarter.
The Rampage would go on to hold a 38-21 halftime lead after touchdowns by Hines and Timon Marshall.
The Blaze would rebound to outscore the Rampage 28-21 in the second half, but fell to 1-1 against Central Division teams and failed to win back-to-back games for the first time in franchise history.
Gesser finished 24-of-42 passing for 293 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions. Burley finished with seven receptions for 94 yards and two touchdowns and 232 all-purpose yards. WR/LB Tom Pace finished with seven receptions for 87 yards and a touchdown.

GRAND RAPIDS PLAYERS TO WATCH:
WR/DB TIMON MARSHALL - As a member of the Rampage in 2006, Marshall led the AFL and set a Rampage team record with 2,734 all-purpose. In 2006, was the first player in AFL history to record 1,300 receiving and return yards in the same season. He added 22 touchdowns recorded 39.0 tackles on the season. Marshall was named to the 2006 AFL U.S. Army All-Ironman Team and was named the Rampage's Ironman of the Year. Marshall was named AFL Ironman of the Week following the team's impressive 45-42 victory over the Arizona Rattlers on April 23, 2006. He spent five weeks on the Rampage practice squad prior to joining the team in 2005.
DB CHUCK WESLEY - Wesley played four seasons (2003-06) in the AFL with the Buffalo Destroyers, the New York Dragons and the Grand Rapids Rampage. On March 4, 2007, Wesley was named Defensive Player of the Game and recorded a career-high 11.5 tackles in their game against the Colorado Crush. In 2006, he ranked sixth on the Rampage in tackles (27.5) and fourth in pass breakups (4) despite playing in only 10 games. He was signed by the Rampage off of the Dragons' practice squad in 2005. While with Buffalo, Wesley ranked thirdon the Destroyers in tackles (43) and second in interceptions (4) as a rookie in 2003. He was also runner-up for AFL Rookie of the Year in 2003.
QB MICHAEL BISHOP - Grand Rapids recently acquired the former Heisman Trophy runner-up (Kansas State, 1998) in a trade with the Kansas City Brigade. Bishop played for the Rampage in 2004 and 2005. In 2005, he set the league record with 459 rushing yards, including an AFL record 100 yard effort at Colorado on February 5, 2005. In his first game with Grand Rapids since returning to the club, Bishop didn't expect to see much playing time. He had, after all, only participated in 15 minutes of practice and a non-contact walkthrough with the club prior to the contest between the Rampage and Philadelphia last week. After a rough start by quarterback Matthew Sauk, however, head coach Sparky McEwen sent Bishop out for one drive against the Soul late in the fourth quarter. Bishop didn't disappoint, going 5-of-8 for 51 yards and connecting with wide receiver Scotty Anderson for a touchdown.
