September 13, 2005 - USL First Division (USL-1) News Release
TAMPA, FL - United Soccer Leagues announced the Week 21 USL First Division Team of the Week Tuesday, honoring Portland's Dan Antoniuk as the final Player of the Week for the 2005 season.
Timbers forward Dan Antoniuk led Portland in clinching the final USL First Division playoff spot with four goals over two games. On Thursday night, Antoniuk recorded a hat-trick against the Atlanta Silverbacks in a 6-1 win and added another score in a 3-0 win over the Richmond Kickers on Saturday.
Against the âBacks, Antoniuk notched the first goal of the game in the 43rd minute. After 57 minutes the score was 2-1 Portland with Atlanta still hanging on. Antoniuk's next two strikes would put an end not only to the thought of who would win the game but also to Atlanta's playoff hopes. In the 72nd minute he buried a rebound into the back of the net and he iced the game in the 90th as he converted a Byron Alvarez cross for the hat-trick.
On Saturday, the Timbers and Kickers faced off in a game that the Timbers needed to win to ensure themselves a playoff berth. Also, the winner of the game would claim the fifth seed in the USL First Division playoffs. Defender Scot Thompson started the scoring off for Portland in the first half and Antoniuk doubled the lead for the home team in the 84th minute, using a Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar cross to his advantage.
Antoniuk, a Philadelphia native, is in his third season with the Timbers. This season he leads Portland with 13 goals and two assists for 28 points, good for fourth in the league in both goals and points.
