USL First Division statistical awards announced
September 13, 2005 - USL First Division (USL-1) News Release
TAMPA, FL - United Soccer Leagues announced Tuesday the 2005 statistical award winners for the USL First Division regular season, honoring the Goalkeeper of the Year, Assist Leader, Scoring Champion and Goal Scoring Champion. Also announced was the Week 21 USL First Division Team of the Week, honoring Portland's Dan Antoniuk as the final Player of the Week for the 2005 season.
Goalkeeper of the Year
Greg Sutton (Montreal Impact)
The Montreal Impact's Greg Sutton repeated as the Goalkeeper of the Year with the league's lowest goals against average at 0.46, allowing 11 goals in 24 games (2,160 minutes). Seattle's Preston Burpo was the next closest at 0.85.
Sutton, posted a GAA of 0.54 last season en route to the honor in addition to being named league MVP, also led the league in wins (15) and shutouts (15) this season. He was first in shutouts last season with 16 and third in wins with 14.
In addition to having a stellar year with the Impact, Sutton saw action for Canada over the course of the season. He backstopped the Canadian National Team during all three of their 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup matches and earned a shutout for the squad against Northern Ireland in February of this year.
Scoring & Goal Scoring Champion
Jason Jordan (Vancouver Whitecaps)
Vancouver Whitecaps striker Jason Jordan built an early lead in the scoring race with eight goals in the first six games and held form over the course of the season to capture the Scoring and Goal Scoring Championships for 2005 with 37 points and 17 goals. He finished three points and two goals ahead of Atlanta's Fabian Dawkins in both tables.
Jordan finished as the team's leading scorer for fourth straight year and for the fifth time overall. He led the team with eight goals in 1998, nine goals three straight years from 2001-03 and with seven last year. He tallied just three goals in both 1999 and 2000. He began his career with the team in 1997 with five goals. He has 70 career regular season goals and his career assist total is 34 with three this season.
Jordan is the second player for Vancouver to win the Scoring and Goal Scoring Championships with Niall Thompson winning the honor in 1999 with 20 goals and 47 points.
Assist Leader
Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar (Portland Timbers)
Portland Timbers midfielder Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar repeated as the Assist Leader with 12 on the season, twice as many as the trio of Rodrigo Rios (Atlanta), Petter Villegas (Puerto Rico) and Noah Delgado (Puerto Rico) who finished tied for second. Alcaraz-Cuellar finished with 10 last season.
Alcarez-Cuellar's point total this season, ironically, was the lowest of his five-year career with just one goal on the campaign. He has led the Timbers in all four seasons with the club. In his debut 2002 season with Portland he posted eight assists with nine the following season. He has 42 career regular season assists and 13 goals.
