Youngstown 5, Chicago 2
The visiting Phantoms scored the first two goals of the game and never trailed in claiming a 5-2 road win at Chicago Sunday.
Ryan Botterill's ninth goal of the season, which came at 12:39 of the opening period, came after he wired one from the off-wing that found the back of the net in setting the for Youngstown.
Adam Pietila got the first of his two goals in the game when he scored at 5:47 of the second in making it a 2-0 Youngstown lead. Charlie Major responded for Chicago a minute later, but Pietila scored again when he converted on a power play chance at 11:28. Charlie Cerrato, who had an assist on Botterill's goal in the first period, scored on the power play at 18:09, but when Mick Thompson scored a shorthanded goal for the Steel eight seconds later and the score stood 4-2 in favor of the Phantoms after two periods of play.
Andrew Strathmann scored an empty net goal at 17:54 to close out scoring in the game.
Youngstown, which has gone 7-1-2-0 in its last 10 games, outshot Chicago by a 46-24 margin in the game.
Waterloo 6, Sioux Falls 4
Gavyn Thoreson scored twice and assisted on two others as Waterloo held on for a 6-4 win at Sioux Falls Sunday.
The Black Hawks scored the first three goals of the game with Gavin Lindberg getting things going at 12:45 of the second. Thoreson scored three minutes later and at the end of the second, Waterloo held a 2-0 advantage.
The two teams then combined to score eight times in the third period with Waterloo's Grady Deering beginning the offensive outburst at 3:04.
Defenseman Artur Cholach scored his first USHL goal a minute later to put Sioux Falls on the board. A Tyler Miller power play goal at 9:34 gave Waterloo a 4-1 lead. Gennadi Chaly scored for the Stampede at 9:34 and when J.J. Wiebusch scored a man-advantage goal at 12:08, gSioux Falls found itself within one. Michael Phelan tallied at 13:45 to give the Hawks a two-goal cushion, but when Beckett Hendrickson scored at 16:43 with goaltender Caleb Heil on the bench for an extra attacker, the Stampede trailed by one. Thoreson's second goal of the game, which came into an empty net at 19:16, sealed the win for Waterloo.
Waterloo, which evened its record at 8-8-0-0 with the victory, was outshot by a 38-23 margin in the contest as goaltender Calvin Vachon finished with 34 saves. Sioux Falls owns a 9-7-1-1 record with Sunday's result.
Next action in the USHL is Wednesday with four games on the docket.
