USHL Completes Dispersal Draft

Published on May 23, 2014 under United States Hockey League (USHL) News Release

Chicago, IL - The United States Hockey League today completed a dispersal draft of players that were on the Indiana Ice season-ending roster and affiliate list for the 2013-14 season. All players that have junior hockey eligibility for the 2014-15 season were selected by USHL Member Clubs.

The Indiana Ice were granted dormancy for the 2014-15 season and temporary withdrawal from on-ice competition as the organization focuses on development of new facility and permanent home for the USHL Member Club in the Indianapolis area.

The Ice recently captured the USHL Clark Cup title in a thrilling five-game series with the Waterloo Black Hawks. It was the second championship over the 10 seasons that the Ice have competed in the League.

The selection order for the dispersal draft was based on the reverse order of the 2013-14 regular season final standings, meaning the Fargo Force selected first in each round, followed by the Youngstown Phantoms and Tri-City Storm. The expansion Madison Capitols and Bloomington Thunder selected after the non-playoff teams in each round. This was the same order followed during the recently completed Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the 2014 USHL Draft.

Fargo used the first selection in the dispersal draft to choose forward Denis Smirnov. The 16-year-old recorded 41 points (15g, 26a) and a plus-20 rating over 47 regular season games and then added five points (3g, 2a) in 12 playoff contests for the Indiana Ice. He was named to the USHL All-Rookie Team and is committed to play college hockey at Penn State University.

The Des Moines Buccaneers acquired the second pick via trade with the Youngstown Phantoms and with that selection chose forward Jacob Pritchard. The forward put up 36 points (14g, 22a) and posted a plus-23 rating over 49 regular season games for the Ice. Four of his goals were game-winners. The St. Lawrence University commit added four points (1g, 3a) in 12 playoff games.

With the third selection, the Tri-City Storm picked forward Patrick Newell. The 18-year-old had 43 points (13g, 30a) and plus-24 rating over 59 regular season games before adding seven points (4g, 3a) in 12 playoff contests, including two game-winners for the Clark Cup champs. He is committed to St. Cloud State University.

Team USA did not participate in the dispersal draft as they hold a separate player-selection process that is completed in cooperation with the other USHL Member Clubs.
