U.S. National Team News Release
Ann Arbor, MI â The US National Team Development Program Under-17 Team using a workman like effort soundly defeated the Toledo IceDiggers, 7-0, in North American Hockey League action at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube tonight.
Jeff Frazee a Burnsville, MN native, playing in his first game since January 4, 2004 improved his record to 16-8-1 while stopping 28 shots as he and the US held the IceDiggers off the board on six power play attempts.
The U-17 team got the only goal it would need all night as Jason Lawrence (Saugus, MA) tallied his 14th of the season at 2:12 of the first period. Lawrence received a pass behind the Toledo net from Nathan Lawrence (Stoughton, WI) skated around to the right side of the crease and stuffed home a quick forehand shot past Toledo goaltender Jason Kearney to give the U.S. team an early 1-0 lead.
The U.S. extended their lead at 7:01 of the first period as Jimmy Fraser (Port Huron, MI) scored on a two-on-one break. Defender Mark Mitera (Livonia, MI) initiated the play as he received a pass from Brandon Scero (Canton, MI), and skated down the right side of the Toledo zone. With the IceDigger defender converging on Mitera, he found a wide-open Fraser with a cross-ice pass. Fraser calmly received the puck and sent a backhand shot past Kearney to give the U.S. a 2-0 lead.
The U.S. continued the scoring when Chris Cahill (North Andover, MA) converted on a power-play opportunity. Cahill, stationed in the slot, received a pass from Ryan Stoa (Bloomington, MN.) and snapped a one-time shot through the legs of Kearney.
At 13:01 of the second period Cahill netted his second power-play goal of the night. John Kemp (Arcadia, Calif.) found Cahill wide-open in the slot and he buried a one-timer in the Toledo net. Just 18 seconds later, Jason Lawrence struck again as he netted an even strength tally for his second goal of the night.
The U.S. scoring barrage continued at 13:41 of the second period as Scero picked up his third point of the night with a breakaway goal.
With just under six minutes remaining, Kemp capitalized on a failed Toledo clearing attempt and scored a breakaway goal to put the U-17 team on top 7-0.
"I think with the changes in the roster, in the past several weeks, we are now getting familiar with each other," said Head Coach David Quinn. "We got off to a slow start last week and lost 7-2 to the same Toledo team, but we practiced hard and the guys are getting a much better sense of each other on the ice."
