Ottawa Renegades News Release
KEMPTVILLE â The Ottawa Renegades Football Club, continuing to prepare for Thursday night's pre-season home game against the Montreal Alouettes, had a quick turnaround after a long Sunday practice and were on the field early Monday morning for the final heavy day of on-field sessions at the team's 2005 training camp.
The Renegades had a late afternoon full-pads practice Sunday and then were at it again at 8:20 a.m. Monday â both of which lasted nearly two hours. A light scattered drizzle welcomed the Renegades Monday morning â giving the team a bit of a break from the hot, humid conditions that the squad has faced for most of training camp, being held at Kemptville College/University of Guelph.
The Renegades ran team drills, ran live plays (without pads or hitting), as well as special teams field goal sequences. Ottawa kicker Matt Kellett blasted two field goals from 45-yards out during the day. The team also had stations set up across the field early during the day and players worked on technique and various drills.
TRANSACTIONS: The Renegades will have to cut down the roster to a 50 players (not including draft picks) by 11:59 p.m. tonight. Darnell Kennedy had his second practice of camp after signing with the Renegades Saturday.
LIMITED ACTION: Quarterback Brad Banks (shoulder), cornerback Crance Clemons (knee), quarterback Tyler Paopao (shoulder), receiver Darryl Ray (hamstring), linebacker Cam Yeow (shoulder), defensive lineman Cameron Legault (ankle), linebacker Brian Oddi (knee), receiver David Azzi (hamstring), offensive linemen Mike Sutherland (hand), Val St. Germain (groin) and centre George Hudson (foot) missed practice. Receiver Pat Woodcock also was out.
NEWS AND NOTES: Catch of the day came from veteran receiver Yo Murphy, who hauled in a diving catch and kept a foot in bounds in the opening hour of practice... Defensive backs continued to make big plays, including a nice interception from newcomer Quincy Coleman... Battles continue on the defensive line... The final practice in Kemptville will be Tuesday and should be a light, short one â centered mainly around special teams... Head coach and general manager Joe Paopao said that Pat Fleming will split punting duties Thursday and let others handle kicking...
SOUNDING OFF:
Here are some of Joe Paopao's thoughts on certain players...
On Jean-Francois Roy â offensive lineman: "He started off like gangbusters and we've been pleased with his improvement since last year (when he arrived as an undrafted free agent and was released late in camp). You've got to watch out for those Bishop's guys."
On the arrival of Kennedy:
"We felt that he has the play calling down and he'll get some time in the (pre-season) game (Thursday). We'll probably go with Kerry (Joseph, starting quarterback) for a half."
On the Canadian receiving corps:
"We have some guys and could even add Cory (Hathaway, rookie) at slotback. He is smart and in our offence we can put backs in the formation. That's the back-up, back-up plan. I like Markus Howell. He's a joker player. Not a clown, but like the card. We're really pleased with him."
