Ottawa Renegades News Release
KEMPTVILLE â The Ottawa Renegades Football Club had a short preparation practice Wednesday morning at Kemptville College/University of Guelph as the team continued to get set for Thursday's pre-season opener in Montreal (June 9 at Percival Molson Stadium against the Alouettes, 7 p.m.). The exhibition game is the first battle against an opponent during the 2005 training camp.
"This is a new year and we hope to prove people wrong," said Renegades receiver Pat Woodcock after the 40-minute walk-through Wednesday. "We have a lot of new faces and the attitude is good. I think we'll be fine."
Through the first week-and-a-half of camp, the Renegades have gone through practices with and without pads; been mainly outdoors through two-a-days; had a pair of indoor workouts due to rain and also experienced the Black-White Scrimmage last Saturday.
Thursday, when the lights go on in real competition, it will be much different.
"Game speed is a lot different and it will be our truest evaluation," said Renegades head coach and general manager Joe Paopao. "I think our conditioning is decent and overall, I am pleased with the team. We have got to play well as a team and against a team like Montreal, which is pretty good, we will have a good test."
Paopao said that quarterbacks Brad Banks (No. 2) and Paul Peterson (No. 3) would split duties taking snaps in the first half. Starting pivot Kerry Joseph would get the nod to begin the third quarter and the Banks/Peterson duo would also play in the fourth quarter.
TRANSACTIONS: None.
LIMITED ACTION: Cornerback Crance Clemons (knee), quarterback Tyler Paopao (shoulder), receiver Darryl Ray (hamstring), offensive linemen Val St-Germain (groin) and Mike Sutherland (hand), running back Herbert Goodman (meniscus injury suffered during Saturday's scrimmage), linebacker Cam Yeow (shoulder), linebacker Kyries Hebert (family emergency) w! ill not be active ...
NEWS AND NOTES: Paopao told the media that defensive lineman Kai Ellis has had swelling go down considerably over the last couple of days and will see more action next week... The head man also indicated that Woodcock is scheduled to dress, play about a quarter and have the starting slotback get used to game speed... The Renegades did not even come out in practice jerseys or helmets Wednesday. Players used walk-through day as an opportunity to be in their own sweats instead... As many as four players could be handling returns Thursday... Paopao indicated that coaches will closely be monitoring the battle along the line of scrimmage and how effective the Renegades are on the pass-rush; of how the team ! handles the "whole inventory of Montreal's receivers and if we can jump up and bat balls down"; and, of course, the offensive line... The Renegades travel to Montreal Thursday, departing Kemptville at noon. The team will have a pre-game meal at a downtown hotel and proceed to Molson Stadium from there. The squad returns back to Kemptville College/University of ! Guelph after the game... Chris Dawson from The Weather Network was on hand at practice Wednesday, filming a feature on heat stroke in football... Veteran Ottawa Citizen columnist Wayne Scanlan also made his training camp debut, doing an advanced story on the pre-season game... The Renegades will have Friday morning off, with meetings and film study taking up most of the schedule that afternoon...
SOUNDING OFF:
Here are some of Joe Paopao's thoughts regarding the upcoming pre-season game Thursday in Montreal...
"We will play a lot of man coverage against a good passing team and evaluate the individual stuff. We are looking at a number of areas because of the adjustments we made in the off-season. Our defensive line and the tackle play on the offensive line will be important. How our receivers respond and our back end (secondary) will be looked at â so everybody." Peterson on his first CFL game:
"All you can ask for is to play in a live game and show what you can do and get an opportunity. I'm excited about this situation and I have learned a lot." Banks:
"There are a lot of great players on this team and guys who can just play. We are building a championship team and our receivers have size and speed. We are getting chemistry down with the guys on the field and we are going to go out (Thursday) and play our game. Kerry is the No. 1 guy and we work really (well) together. Most of the time I am learning from him, and he shares with me about (defensive) coverages, how to attack them â could be anything."
