Upcoming Doubleheader

May 11, 2004 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Brevard County Manatees News Release

Here's the list of upcoming events at Space Coast Stadium:

Tonight: Gates open at 6:00 pm for a 7:05 pm start against the Daytona Cubs. It's Two-For-Tuesday; all Tickets, Hot Dogs, Fountain Drinks, and Draft Beers are all two-for-one all night long. It's also Rockledge Community Night; all Rockledge residents will receive $2 admission with proof of residency at the Box Office. The two-for-one ticket offer does not apply to the special Rockledge tickets.

Tomorrow: The Manatees head out to Lakeland for a four-game set.

Sunday: Off day, no Manatees games scheduled.

Monday, May 17th: The Red Cross Bloodmobile will be at Space Coast Stadium from 12:30 pm – 5:30 pm. The Manatees are asking fans to roll up your sleeves and give a pint of blood to save lives. Traditionally America's blood reserves run dangerously low every summer not from a lack of caring, but rather from so many donors are on vacation and miss appointments. Unfortunately, this is also when our blood needs are the greatest due to an increase of traffic accidents. There has been a lot of press about where does the donated blood ends up; does it stay local and help Floridians? Red Cross blood collections taken in Florida assist the southeastern US. Your blood might save a child's life in Georgia or a grandfather's in South Carolina. Maybe that makes a difference to you, where the blkood ends up. But when September 11th impacted us Americans rolled up their sleeves without being asked to donate blood, not caring about who received it because we're Americans first and when people need help we respond, that's what makes us Americans. There's not telling where your blood will end up but it will save lives! Guaranteed!

The bottom line...donating a pint of blood takes about 20 minutes, and that's total time, including a quick temperature and blood pressure check, some easy paperwork, donation time, and a couple minutes to eat a cookie or two and drink some juice to rehydrate. Every pint of blood collected can save two lives!

If you donate blood at our blood drive on Monday the Brevard County Manatees will give every donor two tickets to Monday night's Doubleheader for doing the right thing and assisting the Red Cross.

The Doubleheader will begin at 5:05 pm against the Palm Beach Cardinals. Both games will be seven innings in length with something very unique happening between games. But first, the night will be dedicated to Hurricane Awareness. For those who are new to the area, Hurricane Season rolls around every June 1st and if you've never experienced a hurricane up close and personal, please heed the warnings and prepare your family because it CAN happen here. Being a Midwesterner, I scoffed at my wife when she prepared for Hurricane Hugo back in North Carolina in '88. After that it was Bonnie, Danielle, Fran, and then Floyd that made our stadium in NC look like ground zero. Plan on attending this game and getting the information to make sure your family is prepared for this season.

Between games we'll have a little fun, however. We're going to auction off our interns. But the beautiful thing is that the rest of the staff pairs off with an intern and decides the activity that the intern will be involved in, for example, just for giggles, let's say you need somebody to come over and play 15 hours of Video Games with you and cook you dinner...that could be arranged. Maybe you want that intern to serve you dinner at an upcoming game in a luxury suite. That, too, can be arranged. You see where this is going, we can get creative as we want, and, because no intern has stepped forward and asked me to select a fun promotion for him (or her), I will open it up to the fans and the intern that gets stuck with me on this promo will suffer the wrath or experience your idea of fun.

What'yda say, fans?

Got a crazy idea for fun with an intern? Email me at buckrogers@spacecoaststadium.com and send me your ideas. Let's see how wild the fans think; and don't be afraid to mention an intern by name that you'd like to bid upon. I know for a fact that the Mayor of Van Vleetville has a rather large stash of cookies and goodies. Now the image of Berm Deck Johnny delivering a bag of his personal stash of cookies and snacks to me while I'm sitting in the Owner's Suite watching a game in air-conditioned comfort is pretty appealing. However, we have Shannon, our Canadian intern who let it slip that she plays volleyball...grabbing a few friends and heading to the beach for a volleyball tournament with a ringer on your side isn't a bad thought either. Or Kokomo Joe. Or Ross. Brett. Tyler. Maybe your grass needs cutting. Maybe you need somebody to take Grandma out to Sunday dinner. Maybe you need somebody to help wash the car, clean the garage, or help devour a large pepperoni pizza while watching the game on TV on a Sunday afternoon. That's just touching it lightly. This could get ugly, and I'm not saying it won't, but now is your time to help determine the outcome of one of them. Let's not leave it to chance, let's determine somebody's fate ourselves.

Get creative. But let me know because it seems that all of them are shying away from me (I wonder why?).

Where does the auction money go? That's easy, right into the interns' pockets. You didn't think that they'd ‘volunteer' to do this out of the goodness of their Manatee heart, did you? But therein lies the challenge, what's it worth? How do you place a value on Ross coming to your office one day and answering phones? How much is it worth to have Brett work the drive thru? Or Tyler giving the dog a bath? Big Joe from Kokomo demonstrating how to properly prepare and devour eight bratwursts?!

We'll find out next Monday night between games of the Double-Dip.

Have a good night, everybody. We'll see you at game time.

Rock on!
