Washington, D.C. (July 20, 2005) - D.C. United will begin Open Cup play with a fourth round contest against the Richmond Kickers of the United Soccer League First Division on August 3 at 7:00 p.m. The game is set to be played at the University of Richmond Stadium, in Richmond, Va. The Kickers currently sit tied atop the USL First Division standings with a record of 10-5-2 (32 pts.). Richmond advanced to face United after defeating the Ocean City Barons (Premier Development League) last night by an astounding score of 8-4 in Richmond.
"We look forward to our entrance in the 2005 U.S. Open Cup," said United Technical Director Dave Kasper. "We especially look forward to a rematch with the Richmond Kickers."
Last July, the Black-and-Red lost 2-1 in Richmond against the Kickers. United's lone goal came off of a Nana Kouffer header, with Freddy Adu getting the assist.
Also of note, United midfielder Clyde Simms was a part of Richmond's team last year. Simms signed on with United on February 25 of this year and has seen time in 13 MLS matches (seven starts) for the Black-and-Red. Simms has been so impressive in 2005 he was called up to the U.S. Men's National Team earlier in the year.
