Virginia Destroyers News Release
Virginia Beach, Va. - September 17- The United Football League is inviting sports fans to vote for their favorite name for the new professional football team that will begin play when the third UFL season kicks off in 2011.
Suggestions for team names began pouring into the mailbox of the official [1]www.UFL-Football.com website following the announcement in June that the Virginia UFL team will play its home games in Hampton Roads.
"We want to empower the fans of this Virginia United Football League team to give us their thoughts on the name that they feel has a strong local connection, as well as the regional name they prefer", said UFL Commissioner MICHAEL HUYGHUE. "Giving fans a chance to name their team underlines our mission to embrace innovation and fan interaction."
Beginning Sunday September 19, the UFL is partnering with The Virginian-Pilot, PilotOnline.com, Radio 102.1 The Game and FanHouse.com to launch the 'Your Town, Your Team, Your Name - You Make the Call' fan poll. Fans will have until October 2 to cast their vote.
Fans will be able to choose between either Virginia or Hampton Roads for the team's name. They can also vote for their preferred choice of team nickname from a shortlist of four options or suggest a different name as a fifth option. The four suggested names are:
Destroyers
Navigators
Commanders
Tritons
The Virginia UFL team that will begin play next September is led by Team President Ed Reynolds and General Manager Doug Williams, the Super Bowl XXII MVP and former Washington Redskins quarterback.
