United Academy features In U.S. Soccer Showcase

Washington, D.C. (June 2, 2010) - D.C. United's Academy sides traveled down to Florida over the Memorial Day weekend to compete in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Spring Showcase in Sarasota. Overall, the Black-and-Red went 2-2-2 in all competitions against some of the nation's top youth clubs.
On Saturday, May 29 United's U-16's secured a win over the IMG Academy by a 2-1 score. Michael Russo and Dallas Aminzadeh scored the goals for the Black-and-Red. On the other side, United's U-18's lost by the same score, with Michael Funes contributing the lone goal.
On Monday, May 31 both Academy sides drew against Vardar by 2-2 scorelines. Uwem Etuk and Aminzadeh scored for the U-18's, while Marco Hurtado and Bradley Vorv found the scoresheet for the U-16's.
On Tuesday, June 1 United's U-18's registered an emphatic 6-1 win over Pateadores with a hattrick from Paul Torres, and goals from Steven Mashinski, Connor Shanosky, and Iyassu Bekele. The U-16's rounded out the weekend action by dropping their final match 3-1 to Pateadores, as Julian Griggs tallied United's only strike.
Additionally United's U-20 Academy team will face a Nigerian youth side from Columbus Academy in Abuja, Nigeria this Thursday, June 3 at United's training facility. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. The African club is on a 12-day tour of the United States and will visit the Nation's Capitol, complete with a visit to the staff of Congressman Chris Von Hollen, who was instrumental in putting the trip together. On Saturday, June 5 the Nigerian players will accompany United's Academy members at the club's MLS home match against Real Salt Lake at RFK Stadium.
