UIF Names Week 13 Players of the Week
June 21, 2006 - United Indoor Football Association (UIF) News Release
Omaha, NE - United Indoor Football is pleased to announce the UIF Week 13 Players of the Week. For the fourth time this season, Ohio Valley quarterback, Matt Kohn has been awarded the Offensive Player of the Week. For the second week in a row, Nate Fluit of the Storm takes the Defensive award and Dillon Pieffer receives his third Special Teams honor for the 2006 season.
Matt Kohn continues his amazing leadership under center and has propelled his Greyhounds (6-6) into the middle of the playoff race after starting the season with a dismal 2-5 record. Kohn and his Hounds were unable to pull off the victory this past weekend against the East Division leaders, the Lexington Horsemen, by a score of 41-54; but he still put together an impressive run. Kohn threw for 204-yards from 21 of 30 passing and an impressive four touchdowns. He also rushed for 49-yards and two scores himself. Kohn currently leads the league in passing yards per game (177.2), total offense (206.6) and is third in pass efficiency with a 104.6 rating. Next week the Greyhounds head to Ft. Wayne (3-9) to face the Freedom.
For the second week in a row, defensive end Nate Fluit, of the Sioux Falls Storm (12-0) has been awarded the Defensive Player of the Week. Fluit and the Storm were trailing the Sioux City Bandits (5-7) the entire contest, until in the mid-fourth quarter, he managed to block a field goal attempt and give the Storm field position inside the Bandits 15-yard line. On the second play of the next possession, the Storm scored and then had the lead for the fist time in the contest, 20-17, with seven minutes left in the game. Sioux Falls prevailed by a final score of 25-17. Fluit ended the night with five solo tackles, two assisted and 4.5 sacks for a loss of 20-yards. In the fourth quarter alone, Nate recorded the blocked field goal and two sacks which changed the outcome of the game. This season he is leading the sack category with 15 on the year, which is five more than the second place. This weekend the Storm travel to the Tyson's Event Center for a re-match with the Bandits in Sioux City.
Dillon Pieffer had a chance two weeks ago to practice with the Chicago Rush of the AFL as they prepared for their quest at capturing the AFL Championship, which they did. If the Rush is hoping to find a clutch kicker out of the UIF, they found him. Pieffer nailed a 38-yard field goal as time expired last Saturday night to defeat the Ft. Wayne Feedom by a score of 29-27. He also hit another field goal early in the fourth quarter to make him 2 for 2 on the night. He also hit all three of his PAT attempts. On the season Pieffer has scored 107 points by kick and ranks him third in the league amongst kickers. The Raptors (8-4) have clinched a playoff position and will host the Bloomington Extreme (5-7) this Saturday night.
Receiving honorable mention are: Offense, Eddie Eviston (LEX); Defense, Randy Stella (OMA); and Special Teams, Ted Retzlaff (OMA).
