Ughy's five goals sputter Ignition

April 1, 2007 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
Chicago Storm News Release

The Chicago Storm won their team record seventh straight game Sunday afternoon, defeating the first place Detroit Ignition 18-13. Target man Mark Ughy led the way for the Storm, scoring five goals in the victory. With the win, Chicago moves to 18-12 a half game behind the Ignition (18-13). While Detroit's regular season is over, Chicago can move into first place in their regular season finale Saturday afternoon if they defeat the Milwaukee Wave by more than points. Saturday's game is at home in the Sears Centre at 1 pm.

Hungarian forward Mark Ughy started off his unbelievable night with a pair of goals in the first. His first coming off of a pass from veteran midfielder John Ball three minutes into the game and his second off of a penalty kick following Detroit's Bill Sedgwick being called for a penalty inside the goalkeeper area. In between the two Ughy goals, rookie sensation Stephen Armstrong took a pass from midfielder Matthew Stewart and buried a shot past Detroit 'keeper Sonaldo for his 30th goal of the season. That goal breaks the former Storm record of 29 in a season set by former Storm midfielder and current Ignition captain Novica Marojevic. The three goals gave Chicago a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Neither team managed any points in the second but in the third both teams swapped goals. Detroit rookie Worteh Sampson put the Ignition on the board, beating Storm goalkeeper Jeff Richey. Chicago countered off yet another Ughy goal. The Hungarian hat trick was completed when Ughy received a pass from Brazilian defender Fabinho and Ughy blasted a shot outside the three-point arch. The three-point goal marks the first of Ughy's career. Detroit scored again, this time the goal came from Midfielder Kyt Selaidopoulos but Storm midfielder Andy Rosenband scored a two-pointer of his own to give the Storm an 11-4 lead going into the fourth.

Ughy scored his 27th and 28th goal of the season in the fourth quarter, off of a pair of Randy Soderman assists. Then Detroit countered with the league's leading scorer Jamar Beasley's power play goal. With four minutes left in the game, the Ignition pulled Sonaldo in favor of the sixth attacker and John Ball took advantage of the open net for Chicago, scoring a three-pointer from distance. Detroit did cut the lead off of a two-point goal from Hewerton and a three-point goal from Carlos Farias but time ran out on the home team, leaving the Storm with the 18-13 win.

Storm goalkeeper Jeff Richey won his 11th straight MISL regular season start, dating back to 2005-06, stopping 19 of 25 shots on goal. The Storm finishes the season with a 3-3 record versus the Ignition and both teams have scored 76 points against each other. Should Chicago beat Milwaukee on Saturday, they would have to do so by more than four points to win the third tie breaker in the MISL, total points for and against. Detroit currently sits at +44 and Chicago is at +40.
