U.S. Nat'l Under-18 Team Tops Steel in Season Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The U.S. National Under-18 Team posted a 3-2 win over the Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube on Saturday afternoon.

Jordan Schroeder (Lakeville, Minn.) tallied the game winner at the 14:50 mark of the third on the power play. Schroeder took a pass from David Warsofsky (Marshfield, Mass.) and sent the puck past Chicago netminder Rob Madore for the game winner.

The Steel built an early 2-0 lead on a pair of power-play goals. Andy Miele opened the scoring at the 17:50 mark of the opening stanza followed by Andrew Miller's marker at the 7:22 mark of the second period.

Patrick Gaul (Pittsburgh, Pa.) finally got Team USA on the board with a power-play goal at the 11:24 mark of the middle stanza as Team USA held a 28-5 shots on goal advantage in the middle stanza. Team USA tied the game at two on a Danny Kristo (Eden Prairie, Minn.) marker at the 10:25 mark of the third period and won the game just 4:25 later on Schroeder's goal.

USA netminder Nick Maricic (Alta Loma, Calif.) earned the win in net, stopping 20 of 22 shots. Madore finished with 34 saves in a losing effort.

"Today was a good way to start the season," said U.S. Head Coach John Hynes. "It was tough, hard-fought contest that tested us on a number of levels throughout the game."

The U.S. National Under-18 Team heads out to the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minn., Sept. 19-22, where it will play four games in as many nights.
