U.S. Nat'l Under-17 Team Falls To Alpena

ALPENA, Mich. -- The U.S. National Under-17 Team fell to the Alpena IceDiggers of the North American Hockey League by a score of 7-1 this afternoon at the Northern Lights Arena.

The National Team was unable to overcome three Alpena power-play goals and a hat-trick by IceDiggers defenseman Ben Kitzmiller.

Team USA's lone goal, registered by defenseman Sam Lofquist (Faribault, Minn.) and assisted by Stephen Rogers (Watertown, Mass.), was bookend by a trio of Alpena goals as the IceDiggers were able to claim the 6-1 victory.

The Under-17 Team will shoot for a better fate when it returns to Alpena on Thursday, February 1, for a rematch with the IceDiggers. Thursday's contest at the Northern Lights Arena will begin at 7:00 p.m. EST.

NOTES: The Under-17 Team's leading scorers Vinny Saponari (Powder Springs, Ga.) and Jordan Schroeder (Lakeville, Minn.) along with goaltender Nick Maricic (Alta Loma, Calif.) are currently competing with U.S. National Under-18 Team and missed this afternoon's game at Alpena ... National Team defensemen Ryan Grimshaw (Rochester, N.Y.) and Grant Scott (Sewickley, Pa.) along with forward Richard Manley (South Buffalo, N.Y.) remain out of the lineup due to injury.
