U.S. Nat'l Under-17 Team Falls, 2-1, at Alpena

ALPENA, Mich. - Drew Shore (Denver, Colo.) tallied his 12th goal of the year for the U.S. Nat'l Under-17 Team, but the Alpena Ice Diggers pulled out a 2-1 victory in North American Hockey League action Saturday night at Northern Lights Arena. Netminder Michael Clemente (Great Falls, Va.) stopped 21 of the 23 shots he faced for Team USA.

Niether team scored in the opening frame, but both lit up the board in the second stanza. Nick Grasso chipped in a power-play goal for the IceDiggers at the 7:47 mark, off assists from Bryan Ross and JC Gulch. Shore put Team USA on the scoresheet at 12:25, while the squad was skating with a man advantage. Mark Goggin (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) and Cam Fowler (Farmington Hills, Mich.) each provided assists on the goal.

Andy Yarber netted what proved to be the game-winning marker for Alpena at 2:03 of the third period, thanks to helpers from Ryan Sell and Tyler Pilmore.

Goaltender Nick Graves turned aside 21 of the 22 shots he saw for the IceDiggers.

The U.S. Nat'l Under-17 Team (29-27-2) continues its road swing with a two-game set against the St. Louis Bandits at the Summit Center next Friday (March 14) and Saturday (March 15). Both contests are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. C
