U.S. Nat'l U17 Tops Motor City, 6-3

WYANDOTTE, Mich. - Six different players tallied goals as the U.S. National Under-17 Team defeated the Motor City Machine here tonight at Yack Arena to complete a weekend sweep of its North American Hockey League North Division foe.

Emerson Etem (Long Beach, Calif.) got Team USA on the board first after he tipped Jarred Tinordi's (Marysville, Md.) shot between netminder Zach Hansen's legs at 5:23 of the first stanza. Stuart Higgins (Troy, Mich.) doubled the U.S. lead after he found his way around a Machine defender and fired a wrist shot past Hansen on the glove side. Luke Moffatt (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) put Team USA ahead, 3-0, after he picked up a rebound of off Tinordi's shot and stuffed it home. Kevin Bechart tallied for Motor City at 16:50 to make it 3-1.

In the second period, Michael Mersch (Park Ridge, Ill.) took a pass from Shane Sooth (Canyon County, Calif.) in the high slot and beat Hansen between the legs at 5:24. Motor City answered back with a goal from Nick Taurence at 7:14. Team USA took a 5-2 advantage after Jacob Fallon's (Southlake, Texas) power-play tally at 9:53. Ryan Misiak pulled Motor City within two after his goal at 13:49.

Jason Zucker (Las Vegas, Nev.) scored just 49 seconds into the third period to account for the 6-3 final.

Netminder Jack Campbell (Port Huron, Mich.) turned aside 21 shots en route to the win.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team next travels to Monthey, Switzerland, for the 2008 Under-17 Four Nations Tournament. Team USA will take on Under-17 squads from Slovakia, Russia and Switzerland from Nov. 7-9. The U.S. will take on host Switzerland in a pre-tournament match up on Wednesday (Nov. 5).
