U.S. Nat'l U17 Team Falls to Chicago, 4-2

BENSENVILLE, Ill. - Blake Pietila (Brighton, Mich.) and Ryan Haggerty (Stamford, Conn.) each scored for the U.S. National Under-17 Team as it fell to the Chicago Steel, 4-2, here tonight at the Edge Ice Arena.

Pietila staked the U.S. to a 1-0 lead just 3:47 into the contest after he took a pass from Travis Boyd (Hopkins, Minn.) from the right side and slid the puck past netminder Connor Wilson on a second attempt from the doorstep.

Chicago answered back at 10:39 of the second period when Dan Kolomatis wired a shot into the upper-right corner just 11 seconds into a Steel power play. Jake Chelios gave Chicago a 2-1 lead just 28 seconds later after breaking in alone and wristing a puck past goaltender Matt McNeely (Burnsville, Minn.). Ian Young put the Steel ahead by two after he tucked a wrist shot inside the left post at 13:32.

Just 2:00 into the third frame, Andrei Kuchin slipped home a rebound from the top of the crease to make it 4-1. Haggerty cut the deficit in half when his snap shot from the top of the faceoff circles beat Wilson blocker side with 5:07 to play in regulation. Despite a few late rushes, Team USA was unable to solve Wilson again, allowing the Steel to earn the 4-2 decision.

McNeely made 25 saves on the night.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team is back in action Saturday when it meets the Des Moines Buccaneers at 7:05 p.m. CST at Buccaneers Arena in Urbandale, Iowa.
