U.S. Nat'l U17 Advances With 4-1 Win at Alpena

ALPENA, Mich. - Michael Mersch (Park Ridge, Ill.) netted two goals, including what proved to be the game-winner, and Brandon Maxwell (Winter Park, Fla.) made 20 saves as the U.S. National Under-17 Team defeated the Alpena IceDiggers, 4-1, here tonight. Team USA clinched the series three games to one and advanced to the second round of the Robertson Cup Playoffs and will meet either the Traverse City North Stars or the Mahoning Valley Phantoms.

Alpena scored the only goal of the first frame when John Fritsche's shot beat Maxwell at 5:48.

In the second period, Mersch netted a power-play goal at 5:57 when he converted on a feed from Kevin Clare (New Rochelle, N.Y.).

Team USA rode three third-period goals to earn the win. Mersch tallied his second marker just 4:59 into the final frame to give the U.S. the 2-1 advantage. Jacob Fallon (Southlake, Texas) and Shane Sooth (Canyon County, Calif.) scored just 20 seconds apart starting at the 10:25 mark and Maxwell turned aside all eight shots he saw in the stanza to earn the 4-1 victory and clinch the series.
