U.S. National Under-18 Team Tops RPI, 5-4

TROY, N.Y. - Kyle Palmieri (Montvale, N.J.) notched a goal and added an assist as the U.S. National Under-18 Team defeated RPI, 5-4, here tonight at the Houston Field House.

Alex Angers-Goulet put the Engineers up 1-0 at 10:23 of the opening stanza after his snap shot beat netminder Brandon Maxwell (Winter Park, Fla.) on the stick side. Despite out shooting RPI by a 14-5 margin, Team USA could not find the equalizer at the end of 20 minutes.

Team USA came back with a four-goal barrage in the second period, including three power-play markers. Cam Fowler (Farmington Hills, Mich.) tied things up, 1-1, with his power-play tally at 6:23. Palmieri put Team USA ahead, 2-1, after his shot from the high slot slipped under the right leg pad of netminder Allen York. Team USA doubled its lead after Kenny Ryan (Franklin Village, Mich.) followed a rebound off of a Palmieri shot and slammed the puck home at 16:03. Just 1:03 later, Kevin Lynch (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) notched an even-strength tally to give Team USA a three-goal advantage. Bryan Brutlag cut the deficit in half for RPI after he knocked home a rebound with just 31 seconds left to play in the second frame.

The Engineers got back within one after Josh Rabbani's power-play goal 2:56 into the final period. Jeremy Morin (Auburn, N.Y.) put the U.S. ahead, 5-3, after he took a feed from Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas) and fired a shot past Allen's blocker. With RPI on the power play, Chase Polacek lifted a shot over Maxwell at 10:55 to account for the 5-4 final.

Maxwell made 21 saves, including 10 in the third period to earn the victory.

The U.S. National Under-18 Team will head back to New York on Friday (October 17) for a game against NCAA Division III opponent Oswego State at 7 p.m. ET. Team USA will then head to Ithaca, N.Y. for a Saturday-night tilt against ECAC Hockey's Cornell University at 7 p.m.

NOTES: The U.S. National Under-18 Team improved to 3-2-0 against NCAA Division I competition including a 2-0-0 mark against ECAC Hockey foes ... Team USA out shot the Engineers by a 40-25 margin ... Chris Brown and Ryan Bourque (Boxford, Mass.) each recorded two assists ... U.S. forward Jerry D'Amigo (Binghamton, N.Y.) has verbally committed to play hockey at RPI next season. He recorded one assist in the game.
