U.S. National Under-18 Team Finishes Off Harvard, 4-3

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Bolstered by multi-point games from three different players, including a two-goal effort from Kevin McCarey (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), the U.S. National Under-18 Team secured a 4-3 win over Harvard University at the Bright Hockey Arena Sunday night.

"I was happy with our effort tonight," said John Hynes, head coach of the U.S. National Under-18 Team. "It was great to close the weeken with a win against a solid team like Harvard."

Team USA opened up the game's scoring at the 11:29 mark of the first period when McCarey notched his third goal of the year off assists from Nick Pryor (Woodbury, Minn.) and netminder Michael Clemente (Great Falls, Va.). McCarey unleashed a wrist shot from the right circle that handcuffed Harvard netminder Ryan Carroll, and eventually trickled into the net.

McCarey netted his second marker of the evening just over two minutes later to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. McCarey flipped a wrist shot from the bottom of the left circle up high past Carroll on the glove side. David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.) and Robbie Czarnik (Washington, Mich.) provided the helpers on the play for Team USA.

Harvard cut into Team USA's two-goal advantage with 1:45 left in the opening frame, thanks to a goal from Dave Watters. Watters beat Clemente up high on the glove side with a slapshot from the left point.

Team USA recorded its third goal of the evening at the 10:23 mark of the second stanza as Wohlberg lit up the scoreboard on the power-play courtesy of assists from David Warsofsky (Marshfield, Mass.) and Jordan Schroeder (Prior Lake, Minn.). After receiving a pass from Schroeder just to the right of the Harvard net, Warsofsky found a streaking Wohlberg in the low slot. Wohlberg fired a shot over Carroll's left shoulder to stake Team USA to a 3-1 lead.

Harvard's Jon Pelle tallied an unassisted goal at 19:10 of the period to make it a 3-2 game heading into the second intermission.

Carroll was pulled from the Crimson net in favor of John Riley at the beginning of the third, after making 19 saves.

J.D. McCade tied things up for Harvard at the 3:19 mark of the the final period, but Team USA regained the lead for good less than two minutes later. Czarnik put home a shallow-angle shot to secure the game-winner for Team USA.

Harvard had a prime opportunity to earn the equalizer in the with less than eight minutes to play when it was a given a power play. Clemente turned aside an array of shots, however, and his teammates helped finish off a crucial penalty kill.

For the game, Clemente finished with 29 saves for Team USA. Riley stoped seven shots in 19:50 of action for the Crimson.

The U.S. National Under-18 Team (11-12-1-1) will travel to the Twin Ports of Duluth,Minn., and Superior,Wis., next weekend for games against the University of Minnesota Duluth Friday (Dec.14) and the University of Wisconsin-Superior Saturday (Dec. 15). Friday's game will be played at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center, while Saturday's contest will take place at Wesseman Arena.Both games will start at 7:05 p.m.ET.

Notes: Kevin McCarey solidified his first two-goal game of the year ... Robbie Czarnik capped the weekend with two goals ... Michael Clemente pitched his first assist of the year.
