BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - Despite Joe Cannata's (Wakefield, Mass.) 38 saves, the U.S. National Under-18 Team fell to Ferris State University, 3-0, here tonight at Robert L. Ewigleben Ice Arena.

After a scoreless first period, FSU's Blair Riley notched the game's first goal just 12 seconds into the middle stanza. Ferris State doubled its lead when Brendan Connolly fired the puck past Cannata at 10:32.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 3-0 after Chris Zarb fired a snapshot from the left faceoff circle past Cannata at 9:05 of the final frame. Cannata made two highlight-reel saves late in the period to keep Team USA in the game. On both attempts, Cannata was forced to reach across the crease with only his stick outstretched to deny the Bulldog scoring threats.

Despite firing 29 shots on goal, Team USA was unable to solve the trio of FSU netminders, Pat Nagle, Mitch O'Keefe and Derek MacIntyre.

The U.S. National Under-18 Team returns to action tomorrow night (Jan. 5) on home ice against Geneseo State University. Faceoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. EST at the Ann Arbor (Mich.) Ice Cube.

NOTES: Tim Taylor, assistant coach of the U.S. National Under-18 Team, was the acting head coach tonight in the absence of John Hynes. Hynes is currently serving as the head coach of the U.S. National Junior Team at the 2008 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship ... Team USA was without its leading point-getter, Jordan Schroeder (Prior Lake, Minn.), who is also with the U.S. National Junior Team.
