
U.S. National Under-18 Team Defeats Sweden

MINNEAPOLIS - The U.S. National Under-18 Team defeated Sweden,4-3, here tonight at Ridder Arena in its final pre-tournament game prior to the 2009 International Ice Hockey Federation World Under-18 Championship, April 9-19, in Fargo, N.D. and Moorhead, Minn. Jack Campbell (Port Huron, Mich.) made 33 saves to earn the victory.
Drew Shore (Denver, Colo.) notched the only goal of the opening period 12 seconds into a U.S. power play at 7:45. Shore wristed a shot from the right circle that beat Swedish netminder Robin Lehner stick-side, and Campbell stopped all nine shots he faced in the period to secure Team USA's one-goal advantage after 20 minutes.
After A.J. Treais (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) blasted a shot from the point, Kenny Ryan (Franklin Village, Mich.) gathered the rebound and dumped the puck into the open Swedish net for a power-play goal at 4:10 of the second stanza. Sweden got on the scoreboard :57 later with a goal off a rebound of its own, before Kevin Lynch (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) grabbed the puck off a turnover in the Swedish end and scored on a backhand shot at 18:25 to reclaim the two-goal advantage for Team USA.
Jon Merrill (Brighton, Mich.) fired a shot from the right point at 1:39 of the third frame to grab the 4-1 lead. Sweden scored off a turnover in the U.S. zone at 8:22, before adding another marker at 18:44 to account for the final.
NOTES: Sweden outshot Team USA, 36-28 ... The 2009 IIHF World Under-18 Championship will take place at the newly constructed Urban Plains Center in Fargo and the recently renovated Moorhead Sports Center in Moorhead ... The U.S. Men's National Under-18 Team has captured medals in the last five IIHF World Under-18 Championships. Team USA has captured the gold medal three times (2002, 2005, 2006).
Russia Defeats Switzerland, 7-3

BLAINE, Minn. - The Russian National Under-18 Team Defeated Switzerland, 7-3, at the Schwan Super Rink tonight in a pre-tournament game prior to the 2009 International Ice Hockey Federation World Under-18 Championship, April 9-19, in Fargo, N.D. and Moorhead, Minn.
Russia outshot Switzerland, 38-19, and scored five power-play goals to earn the victory.
Kirill Kabanov tallied a goal and two assists to lead Russia.
