U.S. National Under-17 Team Wins Four Nations Tournament

PIESTANY, Slovakia - The U.S. National Under-17 Team (2-0-1) tied Switzerland (1-1-1), 2-2 to win the championship at the 2005 Under-17 Four Nations Tournament.

Ryan Hayes (Syracuse, N.Y.) gave Team USA the early lead with a goal 1:03 into the game on a feed from Matt Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and James van Riemsdyk (Middletown, N.J.). Hayes lead the tournament with four goals in three games.

Switzerland evened the game 2:53 into the second period on a power play goal from Gregory Sciaroni. Only 4:12 later, Team USA fell behind in the game when Adam Hasani gave Switzerland the lead.

Colin Wilson (Greenwich, Conn.) tied the game at two with a goal at the 8:48 mark of the second period. The game remained tied through the second, despite power play opportunities for both teams.

In the third period, Team USA dominated the play, but were unable to get one past Switzerland goalie Damiano Ciacco. USA's defense was tough in the third, USA goaltender Brad Phillips (Farmington Hills, Mich.) only faced two shots, stopping both.

The tie against Switzerland was all that Team USA needed to win the tournament, they finished as the only undefeated tournament.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team will travel to Durham, N.H. next weekend (11/19) to face the Boston Jr. Bruins and Manchester (N.H.) Jr. Monarchs of the Eastern Junior Hockey League in the Bantown Fall Classic.

NOTES: Team USA Head Coach Ron Rolston's teams have won it's last two international tournaments, including the 2005 International Ice Hockey Federation World Under-18 Championship in April, 2005 ... USA Forward, Ryan Hayes finished first in goals and second in points (4-0) at the Four Nations Tournament ... National Under-17 teams from Russia, Slovakia and Switzerland all competed in the Four Nations Tournament ... Last season, the U.S. National Under-17 Team won the Four Nations Tournament in Rochester, N.Y.
