U.S. National Under-17 Team Tops Marquette in Overtime, 2-1

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- U.S. defenseman Sam Lofquist (Faribault, Minn.) scored with five seconds left in overtime to beat the Marquette Rangers, 2-1 in overtime tonight at the Lakeview Arena.

After a scoreless opening frame, U.S. forward David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.) notched a power-play goal 2:29 into the second period with assists to Steven West (Milford, Mich.) and Vinny Saponari (Powder Springs, Ga.) to give the U.S. the 1-0 lead. The Rangers evened the game with 1:31 left in the second period when Jake Hauswirth tallied a power-play goal.

Marquette outshot Team USA 16-to-5 in the third period, but were unable to get one past U.S. netminder Nick Maricic (Alta Loma, Calif.) and the period went scoreless.

In overtime, the shots were even at five. Lofquist scored the game winner with five seconds left in overtime to win the game for Team USA.

Maricic stopped 48-of-49 shots on the night to earn his fifth win of the season.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team will face Marquette tomorrow night (Jan. 12) at 7 p.m. EST at Lakeview Arena in a re-match of tonight's battle.

NOTES: U.S. Head Coach John Hynes (Warwick, R.I.) was unable to make the trip to Marquette, Assistant Coach Patrick Foley (Milton, Mass.) ran the bench tonight for Team USA ... Lofquist has scored three goals in the last two games.
