U.S. National Under-17 Team Shoots Down North Stars, 3-2

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The U.S. National Under-17 Team dropped North American Hockey League north division foe Traverse City, 3-2 in overtime tonight at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.

USA defenseman Cade Fairchild (Dultuh, Minn.) tallied first for Team USA 15:34 into the game on a play from John Albert (Concord, Ohio). In goal for Team USA Brad Phillips (Farmington Hills, Mich.) held off the North Stars attack to give USA the 1-0 at the end of the first frame.

After a scoreless second period, Traverse City tied the game at one on a power-play goal from Mike Sand 6:59 into the third period. The North Stars struck again 1:11 later to gain the one goal advantage at 2-1.

Another USA defenseman scored with 8:31 remaining in the final frame when Joe Lavin (Shrewsbury, Mass.) beat Traverse City goaltender Jeremy Kaleniecki to knot the game at two.

The game stayed tied at two for the remainder of the third period, with both teams earning solid scoring opportunities.

Following a Traverse City penalty in overtime, Colby Cohen (Radnor, Pa.) blasted a one-timer pass from Colin Wilson (Greenwich, Conn.) past Kaleniecki to win the game for Team USA.

"We battled hard tonight against a tough Traverse City team," said USA Head Coach Ron Rolston (Fenton, Mich.). "We got some scoring tonight from our defenseman tonight which was key to our attack, it was a good win for us tonight."

NOTES: The U.S. National Under-17 Team will face two National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III opponents for the first time next weekend as they battle State University of New York- Plattsburgh and Potsdam.
