U.S. National Under-17 Team Rallies, But Falls, 6-4, to Marquette

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The U.S. National Under-17 Team recorded three third-period goals and posted a 42-21 shot advantage, but the Marquette Rangers posted a 6-4 victory in North American Hockey League action here tonight.

The Rangers struck first just 1:23 into the game when Anthony Brown buried a wrist shot from the slot. Chad Pietila gave Marquette a 2-0 lead within the first 28 seconds of the second stanza.

Kenny Ryan (Franklin Village, Mich.) put Team USA on the scoreboard at the 2:57 mark of the middle period, thanks to assists from Kyle Palmieri (Montvale, N.J.) and William Wrenn (Anchorage, Alaska). Ryan stuffed a shot from the bottom of the right circle inside the right post to secure his eighth marker of the year.

The visitors responded with three unanswered goals in the final 14 minutes of the period. After Mike Macari tallied at the 6:11 mark, Garrett Ladd notched a shorthanded marker and a power-play goal at 8:29 and 17:47, respectively.

Team USA answered with two markers of its own in the the third period, cutting the score to 5-3. A.J. Treais (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) netted his 11th goal of the season at 1:34 off assists from Sam Calabrese (Park Ridge, Ill.) and Zach Golembiewski (St. Clair, Mich.). Beau Schmitz (Howell, Mich.) added his fifth marker of the 2007-08 campaign at the 12:31 mark of the frame. Cam Fowler (Farmington Hills, Mich.) handed out the lone assist on the goal.

Pietila contributed his second tally of the evening 21 seconds later to build a 6-3 advantage for Marquette.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team received one more goal from Golembiewski with 2:36 remaining in the final stanza. Calabrese handed out an assist on the play.

Team USA pulled netminder Brandon Maxwell (Winter Park, Fla.) with 1:32 left in regulation, and the squad had a prime scoring chance in the waning seconds, as Kenny Ryan rung a shot off the post from close range. Nonetheless, the Rangers held on for a two-goal victory.

Maxwell finished with 15 saves for Team USA, while Beau Christian turned away 38 shots for Marquette.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team concludes its weekend series with the Rangers on Saturday (Feb. 23) at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. EST.

Notes: Sam Calabrese (two assists) played in his first game since Dec. 27, after being sidelined due to an injury ... Tonight's game started at 8:05 p.m. instead of 7:30 p.m. EST because Marquette was delayed due to hazardous ice conditions at the Mackinac Bridge.
