NEW LISKEARD, Ont. - J.T. Miller (East Palestine, Ohio), Rocco Grimaldi (Rossmoor, Calif.) and Barrett Kaib (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) each tallied as the U.S. National Under-17 Team edged the Czech Republic, 3-2, here tonight in its second game at the 2010 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. Team USA improved to 2-0-0-0 with the win and sits in first place in Group B.
The U.S. jumped out to a quick lead when Miller snapped a shot inside the left post from the top of the right faceoff circle just 2:28 into the game. The Czechs answered back 2:36 later after Vojtech Butor's shot found the top-right corner.
Just 32 seconds into the second stanza, Marek Hrbas's slap shot beat netminder John Gibson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) just inside the right post during a Czech five-on-three power play to make it 2-1. Team USA answered back 3:28 later with a power-play goal of its own when Robbie Russo (Westmont, Ill.) wired a pass to Grimaldi who snapped it into the open net from the left side to knot the score, 2-2. With 5:42 to play in the middle frame, an errant clearing attempt found Kaib, who wired a wrist shot from the left point over sprawling netminder David Honzik.
Gibson made 13 of his 32 saves in the final frame, while Team USA killed four Czech power plays to preserve the 3-2 win.
The U.S. National Under-17 Team is back in action Thursday in Iroquois Falls, Ont., as it takes on Russia at 7 p.m. EST. The game will be webcast live on FASTHockey.com.
