U.S. National Under-17 Team Drops Marquette in Shootout

MARQUETTE, Mich. - Patrick Gaul's (Pittsburgh, Pa.) shootout goal lifted the U.S. National Under-17 Team past the Marquette Rangers by a count of 3-2 in North American Hockey League action at the Lakeview Arena.

Marquette jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead 1:25 into the game on a goal from Luke Bennett. Team USA evened the score at 1-1, 7:18 into the game, on a power-play goal from Stephen Rogers (Watertown, Mass.).

The Rangers regained the lead 58 seconds into the third period when Brodie Zuk was able to slip a shot past U.S. netminder Adam Murray (Anchorage, Alaska). U.S. forward David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.) replied 1:37 later in the final period off a play from linemate Robbie Czarnik (Washington, Mich.) to knot the game at 2-2.

Both Murray and Rangers netminder Beau Christian were strong in the waning minutes of the game to keep the contest even at 2-2 and send the game to overtime. Team USA went on the power play 14 seconds into the extra session, but were unable to capitalize, sending the game to a shootout.

Gaul scored to open the shootout, followed by a goal by Kevin McCarey (Baldswinville, N.Y.) and Murray stopped all three Marquette shooters to earn his fifth win of the season.
