(10/5/03) HOOKSET, N.H. - The U.S. National Under-18 Team lost to the Eastern Junior Hockey League All-Stars (E.J.H.L.) on Sunday 6-5 in overtime. Chris Carlson stopped 29 of 35 shots. Brandon Scero (2g,1a) and C Bryan Lerg (1g,1a) led the way for Team USA. In the first period, the Under-18 team scored on a shot by Brandon Burns from the left point at the 5:28 mark. The EJHL then scored three of the next four goals to take a 3-2 lead.
The U.S. scored the only goal of the second period, tying the game at 3-3. With less than four minutes remaining, the EJHL had a two-goal lead vanish on a deflection by Geoff Paukovich (with 3:46 remaining) and a sharp angle shot by Scero with 1:22 left.
Then, skating four-on-four, the EJHL won it in overtime.
Afterward, EJHL All-Stars head coach Henry Lazar said, "We knew if we played hard and with skills and smarts we can compete with anyone. We let it slip away a bit at the end, but I give our kids credit for coming back in OT. With all the scouts here, this was a great opportunity for them to be seen. It's good for them and it's good for the league, too."
Under-18 coach Moe Mantha said, "We didn't play well as a team, we weren't mentally sharp, and had a lot of defensive breakdowns. The EJHL guys outworked us, outplayed us, and deserved to win the game."
