ANN ARBOR, MICH. âThe U.S. National Under-17 Team lost Tuesday night (March 15), 4-2, in a match-up against the Cleveland Barons. Cleveland took a 2-0 lead after one period, and started the second period adding a power-play goal at the 5:15 mark.
The U-17s got on the board with a Kevin Montgomery (Rochester, N.Y.) goal at 11:52 of the second. Bill Sweatt (Elburn, Ill.) and Michael Carman (Apple Valley, Minn.) assisted on the play. The score after the second period was 3-1, in favor of Cleveland.
Third period action saw the U-17s come within one, as Greg Squires (White Plains. N.Y.) notched a goal at 3:48 of the third. Chris Atkinson (Sparta, N.J.) and Blake Geoffrion (Brentwood, Tenn.) earned the assists. The score would remain 3-2 until Cleveland assured the win with an empty net goal in the remaining seconds of play.
U.S. goaltender Brett Bennett (Williamsville, N.Y.) faced 27 shots, stopping 24.
