
U-17 Tops Germany

PIESTANY, Slovakia. -- The U.S. National Under-17 Team (3-0-0) earned their third straight victory at the 2006 Vlad Dzurilla Four Nations Tournament this morning, defeating Germany (1-1-0), 7-3.
Team USA struck first when defenseman Cade Fairchild (Duluth, Minn.) beat German goaltender Andreas Tanzer on a feed from Matt Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.). USA forward Ryan Hayes (Syracuse, N.Y.) stretched the lead to two 9:06 into the first period on a play from line-mate Carter Camper (Rocky River, Ohio). Germany replied 12:04 into first frame on the power-play to cut the U.S. lead to one at 2-1. Camper replied with a power-play goal from Hayes to give USA the 3-1 lead at the end of the first period.
Germany struck quickly into the second period cutting the USA lead to 3-2 just 46 seconds into the period. Camper sniped his second goal of the game for Team USA eight minutes into the frame on a set-up from Barry Almeida (Springfield, Mass.) to put the score at 4-2. USA forward Matt Rust scored his second goal of the tournament 15:21 into the second frame from Camper to push the lead to 5-2.
USA forward John Albert (Concord, Ohio) scored twice in the final frame, one unassisted and one on the power-play from Colin Wilson (Greenwich, Conn.) and Justin Vaive (Buffalo, N.Y.). Germany sandwiched a goal in-between the two Albert tallies for a 7-3 final.
USA netminder Josh Unice (Toledo, Ohio) player well, stopping 28 of 31 Germany attempts.
The U.S. National Under-17 Team faces Slovakia tommorow afternoon at 10:15 a.m. EST in the final game of the tournament. Team USA topped Slovakia 8-2 in an exhibition game three days ago.
NOTES: USA forward Carter Camper leads the tournament in scoring with five points (2-3) in two games. Camper also recorded four points (2-2) in the exhibition game versus Slovakia ... The U.S. National Under-17 Team is currently 6-0-1 in seven games this season at the two tournaments played in Slovakia ... The Vlad Dzurilla Under-18 Tournament is an annual event hosted by Slovakia ... This years tournament field features Switzerland, Germany, Slovakia and the United States ...
