Texas Tycoons News Release
Dallas, TX. Texas Tycoons Associate Head Coach Richard Bacon wanted his team to play aggressive defense, in hopes that it could lead to transition baskets. The Tycoons stepped up the defense against the New Mexico Style and built a large half-time lead and held on for a 108-84 victory at Richland High School. The teams meet again Saturday at 7pm at W.G. Thomas Coliseum in Haltom City.
Texas (1-0) jumped out early, ending the first quarter on a 16-2 run. Using a full-court press, the Tycoons forced 16 first half turnovers and led by 27 at the half. "We always talk about having a substantial lead because we know teams are going to make a run at us," Bacon said. "Our goal was to win every quarter and we won every quarter but the third."
Stan Blackmon and Chris Davis led the Tycoons, including a 9-for-9 effort from Blackmon from the foul line. Blackmon, a Garland native, scored a game-high 23 points, while Davis added 20. "I'm happy to win but we had a letdown in the fourth quarter," Blackmon said. "I sthink the team got tired. The up-temp style of play is what we play to wear our our opponents."
"We had to play with some more energy," Bacon said of the third period. "We have a few energy guys that we bring in the game that got us going again." Jabari Johnson, who sat during the middle of the third period, reentered and scored six consecutive points for the Tycoons and finished also with seven assists and 13 points.
