Tycoons Defeat Mayas In The Battle of Texas

May 12, 2007 - World Basketball Association (WBA)
Texas Tycoons News Release

Dallas, TX - The showdown of the two undefeated teams from the Western division of the World Basketball Association was billed as "The Battle of Texas" and the Texas Tycoons moved to 3-0 on the season handing Mayas-USA (2-1) their first loss by a score of 146-133.

Mayas-USA is the Longview (TX) based expansion franchise in the WBA this season whose team competes in Mexico's LNBP during the fall season. The Tycoons are based in Dallas and also compete in another league, advancing to the Championship game this past season in the ABA. Dallas and their East Texas neighbors of Longview are seperated by less than 100 miles of Interstate and the two teams were nearly inseperable throughout much of the first half on Friday. Texas held a slight edge at 36-35 after one quarter while the Mayas took their turn on top at 75-71 at the half. The game had all the markings of an old west shootout as each team took turns trading baskets, the pace was furious and the Mayas led by an incredible score for three quarters of 113-105.

Tycoons Head Coach Chris Terrell when asked about the game said "We averaged 133 in the ABA and any team (Mayas) with Dorsey at the helm will be able to put up buckets. The pace of the game and the accuracy of the shooting was prolific and I would have to say that if either team decided to back it out and run 24 seconds off the clock that the scoring would of been lower but both teams want to push it and get in the open court so this one was going to come down to who had more left in the tank at the end."
