Two-Time Cy Young Award Winner Denny McLain to Appear at Sliders Game June 21st

On Saturday, June 21st the Sliders will welcome Denny McLain to Springfield. Denny will be on hand to sign autographs, chat with fans, etc. during the game.

Denny is the only living 30 game winner (1968), and the only one to achieve this since Dizzy Dean did it 80 years ago. He is also a two-time Cy Young Award winner ('68 - '69).Perhaps most impressively, he is the only player in baseball history to win both the MVP and Cy Young awards UNANIMOUSLY; other players have won one of the awards unanimously, but only Denny is a UNANIMOUS winner of both! But that's not all:1) He threw a no hitter in his professional debut in the minors, striking out 16 batters.2) He threw a complete game in his major league debut, winning 4 - 3, and also hitting a home run in that game, his only career homer.3) His record in 1968 was31 wins vs. only six losses.4) He earned $30,000 in 1968, or less than $1,000 per win!5) He was a World Champion with the Detroit Tigers in 1968, winning World Series Game 6 over the Cardinals6) He briefly played with the 1972 World Championship Oakland A's7) He was the son-in-law of Hall of Famer Lou Boudreau (dec.)8) He played with legends like Al Kaline, Mickey Lolich, Jim Bunning, Orlando Cepeda, Rollie Fingers, Curt Flood, Catfish Hunter, Frank Howard, Hank Aaron, and also had Ted Williams as a manager9) His other awards include: 1968 Major League Player of the Year, 1968 AL MVP, 1968 AL TSN Pitcher of the Year,1969AL TSN Pitcher of the Year10) He is theauthor or co-author offour baseball books about himself11) He appeared on the cover of four Sport Illustrated magazines12) He appeared on the cover of Time Magazine in 196813) He was a three-timeAll-Star, including the AL starting pitcher in the 1966 game when he got all nine batters out14) Following his 1968 season, Denny appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, Joey Bishop show, Steve Allen Show, Smothers Brothers show, and also met Richard Nixon in the White House15) He was featured on two Capitol Record Stereo LP records, "Denny McLain at the Organ" and "Denny McLain in Las Vegas"16) He was also selected as the Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year for 1968

The Springfield Sliders are members of the Prospect League with teams in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Their 60 game schedule begins in late May and runs into August. All Sliders home games are played at Robin Roberts Stadium located at 1415 N Grand Ave E in Springfield, IL.
